This is my first time creating a topic here and I would like to know about the route, requirements, skills, scores, schools, courses etc to become a doctor in Singapore.I'm taking triple science in Cedar Girls' and currently taking my O levels this year. My goal is a perfect score in the O's and I really hope to take up a course to become a medical practitioner.
Would anyone please share their knowledge with me on the requirements (the JCs I would have to apply for), the scores (A levels, diploma, bachelor, masters, phD whatever) I would need to obtain, the years of studying till work (from JC till university), the requirements (level of education), what jobs (what types of doctoring jobs are offered here in Sg) are possible etc).
I'm really not well-versed in this subject and I would really appreciate it if anyone can share anything about becoming a doctor in Sg, thank you so much!
If you don't get any proper reply here, i suggest you contact Ministry of Health or SMC. Ministry of Health should be the best source you can get useful and proper reply as they are the ones who decide on the criteria of doctors.
It is a lot of commitment, hard work and long hours work to be doctors. Think about it what you really want. Very tough job!
These days many young ones who become doctors because of their parents not what they want.
if u cannot take patients dying in yr hand
consider carefully
Easy way:
O levels: all As
A levels: triple science with S papers preferably. Otherwise, leave out Biology. Nonetheless, get all As for you A levels. ----> 2 years
You'll be able to apply to NUS/NTU.---> 6 years
A more difficult way but with goodies:
O levels: all As
A levels: triple science with S papers preferably. Otherwise, leave out Biology. Nonetheless, get all As for you A levels. ---> 2 years
Study for a degree in a recognised university (preferably science-related majors)---> 4 years (Honours please)
You'll be able to apply to NUS-Duke to study for a M.D. ----> 4 years
If your grades are good and you have the potential to be a physician scientist, you'll be eligible for M.D./P.h.D ---> 7 years
Remember to have outstanding CCA records for both ways.
The M.D/Ph.D is actually the fastest way because it takes 3 years compared to the traditional M.D programme. The Ph.D part will take 4 years; if you're good and I mean really good, you can finish it withing 1 year? Don't quote me for this. Not everyone is good/gifted.
Becoming a house officer will take you around 1 year.
Becoming a Medical Officer (trainee) will take you around 3 years and for some, 5 years.
From there, you become a registrar and finally, a consultant.
Actually, after you're a house officer, you can venture into different routes such as family doctor, researcher, forensics, academics, etc..
Basically (and hopefully), prior to your retirement, you're either a Emeritus Consultant, a physician scientist, principal resident physician or family physician (senior consultant).
Replace the Emeritus consultant with senior consultant (be practical in life).
Lastly, you'll need a recognised postgraduate qualification and you'll need to complete the Basic Specialist Training (BST) before you're eligible for the registrar position.
What is this?
You own this forum? And, this is the first topic of this forum?
Is trip sci an option in jc?Or do you mean science stream?
So Physics is a must in JC?
Is trip sci an option in jc?
Yes, it is.
Or do you mean science stream?
Triple science is under the science stream.
So Physics is a must in JC?
Yes, you'll definitely need Chemistry n Physics. Biology is a bonus.
And sorry, but I don't really understand how all these forums and topics function. So...haha.
In singapore, becoming a doctor is possible, becoming a dentist is almost impossible.
Ok,thanks alot for all the posts!I will reconsider my options after getting my O lvl scores again.
All the best. Dont forget about us when u come back a Dr. :P
