Hello.
I have just received my O-level results. My L1R5 is 10 points and after deduction of bonus points, my nett score is 8 points. Any advice or recommendations on which JCs I can choose?
I want to take the Science Stream and I have a few JCs in mind. However, are the chances of getting into my desired JCs high?
My first choice would be Anderson Junior College (Sci stream). However, the cut off point for 2009 is 7 points. Do I still have a chance to enter AJC Science Stream? Also, how is the school culture like?
My second choice may be St.Andrew's Junior College (Sci stream). The cut-off point is 8 points. Any alumni of SAJC can advise me on the culture of the school? What i know of, is that it is a Christian school and they do have morning prayers. I am not a Christian though. Is it advisable for me to enter SAJC?
Please help me out. Thank you very much. (:
Hi there,
You did mention that the cut-off points for AJC science is 7 points. Technical speaking, you L1R5 grade is 10 because the other 2 is bonus points. Therefore, if there are students who have 8 points (purely subject points) who are applying for science stream as well, I believe they stands a higher chances. However, there are other factors to consider as well (previous academic and CCA records).
Your second choice is SAJC and the same things go for the science stream admission as well. However, SAJC is a mission school and priorities are given to affiliated schools. If there are students who have the same points as you and they are from affiliated school, definitely the priorities are given to them. As for culture wise, it is still a mission school and certain Christian values are imposed on the students. However, you do not need to attend prayer morning if you don’t want to, provided that you write a letter explaining your reason to the school.
You mentioned about school culture. Personally speaking, school cultures changes over time due to a few reasons (such as the school management, the background of the students and the education system). From what I see, there is no distinctive culture in the different colleges in Singapore because we don’t have our very own Singapore Culture at the first place.
Finally, there are many alternatives besides college education. You may need to hear from more people to get a clearer perspective as well.
I attended SAJC briefly last time. Yes they had morning prayers during assembly (not sure how you can be excused) and weekly chapel service. But I think these distractions are just small distractions. In the end I went to a neighbourhood JC, damn lousy one but still got the As I wanted.
here are JC rankings:
1) RJC
2) Hwa Chong
3) National
4) Victoria
5) Temasek
6) Anglo-Chinese
7) Anderson
the gap between 2) and 1) is almost negligible. and the gap between 2) and 3) is the greatest.
btw the christian thing is not a concern. a bit of time wasted in the morning but you're not expected to say amen and such. As loong as you are not one of those that go into fits when faced with another religion. Just take it easy with an open/closed mind.
for gals, mostly they will entice you with handsome boys to join christianity
for guys, mostly pretty christian gals will do the job
I think AJC is placed before ACJC, to make a correction. It ranked no. 6 eversince many years back.
go ajc cuz got better study environment
Hi,
I believe there is no longer any formal ranking of colleges for years already. One should instead look at the college based on the:
1. Academic experience it gives,
2. Development opportunities it provides,
3. Awards and accreditation it has garnered,
4. Objective personal experiences from students of the school.
Thanks.
Cheers,
Wen Shih

Based on your criteria
1) My Ranking above is accurate.
2) Developmental opportunities tend to be inversely proportional to 1) because in better JCs, there are much more talent and leaders and positions of leadership are harder to come by. It is much easier being councillor EXCO in a small JC than to be a CCA leader in a large JC.
3) In terms of sports, here are the rankings: Raffles> Hwa Chong> National>Victoria and ACJC
