Hi guys, I will be sitting for my O levels Chinese paper this November. For some reason or other, I feel a sense of anxiety. You see, I can comprehend chinese characters and passages, etc. The problem with me is that whenever I have to read chinese-related works, I have to take some time to process the meaning in my head. So, to equip myself with expected standard of Chinese required of a student at my age, I decided to go through my chinese vocabulary handbook dating back to the sec 1 syllabus. It's a tedious job I confess. But what else can I do? Chinese paper these days test you on subjects beyond the textbook content. This means the paper you are taking may not contain chinese vocab you've learnt over the past 4/5 years. You just have to get more exposure and such. Teachers try to help but sometimes they can't really do much. And yea, my chinese essay isn't perfect but i want to write a good one and not just submit a work of mediocre standard up. This problem has been ferreting me day and night and I swear there are times when the thought of having difficulty with the paper simply just pops into my mind. Please do advise on what measures I do take... for I just hate this shortcoming of mine.
Thanks.
Read Chinese newspapers. Everyday. No matter whether it is mainstream or tabloid.
If Chinese newpapers is too much for you, can probably try magazines instead. Watching Mandarin programmes can also improve your command of the language too.

I'm taking HMT. So, I'll be sitting for the normal chinese paper this November, not May. Then again, those who want to sit for a re-test can take the paper in November too. I think I'll be eligible to take a retest next year. I mean for those who take HMT. But there's no way I wanna take the paper again. I just want to secure an A1 this year so that I can focus on my other subjects next year. Unless you're daft, who with a sane mind would want to go through another round of exam again? But if you're not satisfied with the score, I guess retaking isn't a problem.

HAHA. I tried this, umpteen times. I'll conk out reading chinese newspapers, even though I made an effort to. Ergh. I don't think I should go for creative writing or extra tuition because I believe Chinese is a subject that only one can emulate in provided you put in effort. Language is a subject teachers can render the least help in, I guess.
cool.... i cant really recognise chinese characters bur I passed nevertheless... I'm sure you will do an even better job. Good luck.
