Researchers land rare GIANT SQUID
The Yomiuri Shimbun
A giant squid that inhabits deep waters and was estimated to have measured up to seven meters was caught off the Ogasawara Islands this month, the National Science Museum said Friday. Very little is known about the squid, which rarely is caught alive.
According to Tsunemi Kubodera, chief of the museum's third animal laboratory, the squid was caught at a depth of 650 meters about 27 kilometers northeast of Ototojima island of the Ogasawara Islands on Dec. 4.
The squid was not fully grown and measured 3.5 meters despite missing two longer tentacles. Kubodera said it could have measured about seven meters with the tentacles.

2 Teen Boys held over beating ex-pal to death
The Yomiuri Shimbun
Two teenagers were arrested Friday on suspicion of fatally assaulting a 16-year-old former friend, apparently because he would no longer associate with them, police said.
Arrested were a 17-year-old factory employee of Tsurumi Ward, Osaka, and a 16-year-old part-time company worker of the ward.
According to the police, the two beat and kicked Masahiro Miyoshi of Joto Ward, Osaka, in the abdomen and other parts of his body at Tsurumi-ryokuchi Expo '90 Commemorative Park in Moriguchi, Osaka Prefecture, at about 9:20 p.m. Thursday because he would not associate with them. Miyoshi, a first-year student of Chuo High School, died about 2-1/2 hours after he was admitted to hospital.
The three had been at the park since about 9 p.m. with seven other boys aged 15 to 17. The beating reportedly lasted about 10 minutes.
