Hi,
Happy thanksgiving to all in the US!
I'm an undergrad student studying here, and I'm in my American friend's house right now for thanksgiving. Am overwhelmed by the hospitality his family has shown so far and we're going to be digging into an amazing feast soon. I'm thinking of giving him something to say thanks, and I want something from Singapore/Asia.
What do you guys think is good?
I'm thinking of a book about Singapore (any recommendations on good books that introduce the country, not just travel guides?)
and lots of food.
I'd get my family to send the food over by mail, or I'll try to order them online. Any recommendations?
Thanks!
Me too, any recommendation? I just went to their house empty handed. Though of buying something for them before I leave. haha

they are suckers for these things
At the very minimum, a "thank you" card would probably be appreciated.
A book about Singapore, while thoughtful on your part, might not be particularly useful to the hosts. The food might be a better idea, though there's the risk Americans might find it a little too "exotic".
How about a gift certificate from a major retailer? They could use that during their Christmas shopping.
In America we have a saying "It’s the thought that counts". Your friends knowing that you thought enough about them to want to give a gift will mean more than the gift it’s self. Don’t stress too much about getting the perfect gift but a "coffee table book" with lots of pictures from Singapore or the general regain would be cool. Asia is a far away, very exotic place to most Americans and most of us have fantasized about visiting.
I don’t know if the durian would make it through customs.

Although gift cert may be nice but it would show outward how much the present would had costed you... How about a fruit basket? Bottle(s) of wine? Something to add on to the night/day that you spend with their family.
