I'll be "basing" myself out of Osaka as I have a hotel room there for 15 nights, and making day trips to Hiroshima, Kanagawa, Takayama, Onomichi, Nara, Kobe and of course lovely Kyoto. I'll also be up in Tokyo for 2 days and a night, mainly to attend the 2010 Tokyo International Anime Fair in Odaiba.
My 14-day JR Rail Pass is going to get a real workout this time too--I calculated that the cost would be recouped by my third day there.
Edited to add: T-minus 4 days and counting.
Care to post a trip report at civil aviation forum?

You're going to Hokkaido in May? What's the occasion?
I'll post pics in this thread during the trip, time permitting.

hey, hi.
Meia, you are going to the tokyo anime fair alone? feel like going too (im currently living at tokyo btw). but im alone. its abit lonely and i cant really share experience hands on with anybody when im alone. so, i was thinking of looking for companion... who would like to go with me...
Off to the airport in about an hour...
I wanna eat soooooooooooo much stuff at japan...
Hi MG, which hotel are you putting up in osaka ?
I am going in May.
Care to share ? (^_^)/
I'm in Osaka now.
The flight from Minneapolis was long. Too friggin' long. The leg from MSP to ORD on United was fairly uneventful. Had to take a train to get from the domestic to the international terminal at ORD to check in with Japan Airlines. Surprise! They upgraded me from Economy to Premium Economy. Woohoo! Nonetheless, a 13-hour flight is still a long flight regardless of seat comfort, and I wasn't really looking forward to another one hour flight to ITM after arrving at NRT.
The flight got into ITM a little past 6 p.m. Took the airport limousine bus to Shinosaka Station and hoofed it to the hotel. Got my room, then headed out to get some really good ramen noodles at a joint called Hanamichi, which is supposedly one of Osaka's most famous noodle houses. It was a little on the expensive side, but well worth it, in my humble opinion. There is no shortage of eateries around the station and hotel, as I found out when I took a walk around the area after dinner.
I'm setting aside tomorrow to (hopefully) recover a bit from jet lag. I'm hoping to head into the Namba district of Osaka to catch the Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoshitsu movie, and then perhaps bum around the Shinsaibashi area for the rest of the day. Then the heavy travelling begins in earnest on Saturday, when I head up to Tokyo for the weekend to attend the Tokyo Anime Fair 2010 in Odaiba plus do a little sightseeing on the side while I'm there (aka make a mad dash for Akihabara).
Pictures to follow when I've had a chance to resize and upload them.
Edited to add: images.
Out JAL 777 somewhere over Canada. As you can plainly see, Canada comprises a whole lot of... nothing!
My inaugural bowl of ramen noodles, which was eaten at...
...this supposedly famous noodle shop called Hamamichi.
woohoo....enjoy your hols, MG and looking forward to your updates and pics. ;-)
I see japan here.....

Have a great time MG. *chants, onsen, onsen, onsen*
It is T-26hours for me for my trip to Europe...
T-24hrs before i leave rhode island for home....YEAY! i'm getting really bored in RI....
damn...i SOooooooo jealous of MG right now...i wish i can wrap the udon noodles round his/her(?) neck =(
it's funny how i'm missing japan more than i'm missing singapore...
ate at a "japanese restaurant" yesterday at newport and the food was so bad....the tempura was over-battered/fried...the teriyaki chicken was cooked using chicken BREAST (who on earth makes teriyaki chicken with skinless chicken breast!!!)...and it was so tough and tasteless and then they just poured sugary syrup all over it...and the crab roll was so so so spicy (i mean, i CAN eat spicy but that was just way too much) that it gave my hubby a tummy upset.
ohhhh wat i'd give to have an authentic japanese meal right now.....
Have fun while you're back home. Eat everything in sight and then do it again. I haven't visited in years. It's always one thing or another holding me back.
MG: I know why you picked this time of year to visit Japan because this is the time of year when they hold the Festival of the Phallus.
