I think their basket of goods must compose of lotsa technology products which is subject to obsolesence, contributing to the lower CPI.
486 computer, say worth $2,000 15 years ago, today is worth say $10, that will help reduce inflation by 30%.

I agree. That day I bought a present from the States, a US $22 (SIN$32) wallet from Timberland. Realised it costs like SIN$50 here in Singapore.
When my friend flies to US, she buys lotsa GAP.
When a company does budgetting for the year, have to forecast the sales and expenses, expenses is more or less baseline and static. So if you see that with the projected sales and price you cannot breakeven, you mark up the product to make up for the shortfall.
The main problem is that Singapore has a very low money supply circulating in the economy, god or greater mortals only know why. Hong Kong has a monetary supply 3 times that of Singapore.

You ain't kidding! When I was last back in Singapore in '08, I was shocked to discover that the Levi's stores there were selling Dockers casual slacks for northward of S$100. I can get the very same slacks for between US$15 and US$20 here, and occasionally less when they're on sale.
arguably, only food (hawker and foodcourt) is still reasonably priced. the nasi lemak stall i frequent in hougang still sell it to me @ $2.50 fully loaded.
i was in singapore 3 weeks ago and had wanted a replacement asics kayano runner. even in queensway, i couldn't get a good price for it. i ended up buying it in (of all places) tokyo last week while on work as the pricing is comparative to singapore. what swayed me was i get a whole lot service and freebies (free computerized foot scan and analysis, 2010 runner's diary thrown in & 2 free asics limited edition tokyo marathon tote bag) at the asics store in harajuku. in singapore, the chap just want to push the asics shoes in my face and ask me to buy.
even in uniqlo store in japan sell stuff for cheaper than in singapore. you could actually find wool sweaters, jeans, tee for under US$15.
my indian friend who visited singapore in november 2009 also complained about prices in singapore while on a 3 day holiday trip in singapore. but his worst experience was he got `flicked' a$400 in the 4 star hotel he's staying when the cleaner went to clean the room. he could not resolved it satisfactorily with the hotel and just put it to his bad luck.
yah...i buy my GAP, muji, uniqlo stuffs from japan too 'cos they are cheaper over there as compared to singapore.
stuffs in the states are actually very inexpensive as compared to back home too. can't believe i used to pay more than SGD50 for a pair of crocs when i can get them for USD5-10 here in the states!!!
marshalls, tjmaxx are wonderful places for discounted branded stuffs. my ultimate favorite place to shop has to be Ocean State Job Lot...everything is so affordable!!!!!
only eating out at restaurants is more expensive here in the states.

I got my wife a pair of Levi jeans during the last christmas holiday for US$10 buck....he he he....
I know that for Sing retailer they market up 200% for retail price but even than some of the stuff are just way over price....I over heard an American couple was complaining that the price is just total Rip off....and they are not anything great is just normal stuff.....
They sold Strawberry for 8 buck a pint and for some reason blue berry was only $2.85 a pint. Actually blue berry are better brain food than strawberry.....
For all these years there is a lack of consumer product knowledge in Singapore....and of course not even health food is closed to none....A loaf of Real unpolish Wheat bread is closed to 6 bucks....and I can't even find it in NTUC or Cold Storage all the wheat bread are made with enriched flour.....
Singaporean are really getting the short changed....over priced stuff.

You should check out the price differences for electronic goods. I just ordered a Sony mp3 player for US$113, they are selling it for SG$319 in Sony shops.
Planning to order Arcteryx Alpha LT US$399 from the States, they are selling it at SG$999 in Camper's Corner stamford road.
Things in Singapore are extremely overpriced despite being a free port, perhaps this is something only the greater mortals can understand and have an explanation for.
I am not even lookin at the higher end....but just the basic already got screwed....
Are singapore really better off...........????

in singapore...price setting is based on supply and demand. more people eat/buy strawberries...so they are more expensive. doesn't matter if what they are selling is crap...as long as people like crap...crap is gonna be more expensive.

Strawberries are supposed to be cheap, given that there are so many sources coming in to Singapore, namely Australia, US and now South Korea.
Strawberries these few days getting cheaper.... can get $3 a small box....instead of the usual $3.50 - $4.... Though it might be twice as expensive when you get to eat them overseas. But remember, they are planting the strawberries... should be cheaper...
Most unreasonable ones are clothings and shoes.

USA local goods definately sells cheaper.
When USA goods ship to spore, the price increases due to taxes.
What USA goods? All made in China then shipped to USA or Singapore la...
You high on drugs , is it?
From China to Singapore, shipping is definitely cheaper ho...
That's why you've got to love outlet malls. Even then, clothes there are still expensive when you take into account the places that they are manufactured in

200% on whole sales is the minimum. In the state side it is still common to have 100% on whole sales.

Buyer in states side are not willing to pay high price for PRC made....as compared to USA made that is why when you buy Laguna Jeans or 7 they are sew and made in US.

The last time I was in USA, I went with 1 luggage and came back with 2
And I was not even in the city. I was out in the boonies in Fargo and I could buy enough stuff to fill up another luggage
