K. Let's try this out again. I'll start.
Oy Udon, your prolonged disappearance from Pluto, what gives?
Streamie, did you know that MG is the Someone who's getting you your Christmas pressie? He said so himself! *cue battle*
lostintranslation: Have you insulated your home yet? Oh and I forgot to mention that if you continue to open the windows in winter, you could start a mold problem down the road. You can get a non-electric de-humidifier to place in your closets, when the time comes.
Ben: where the heck are you dude?

mold....really? i thot mold happens when there's moisture and when air circulation is poor? cranking up the window will facilitate air circulation? anyway...not my house..."muahahahahaha" laughed the evil tenant
Hi jetta. Do you know Kuali Baba(Nicholas)? I learned yesterday, from a 3rd party, that he'll be a foreign exchange student in San Diego. I'm going to tell him that you live there and can probably answer any questions he may have, if that's okay with you?
Speaking of mold...My Niece's fiance bought a house in Sacramento that has a mold problem.
The former owners knew about it and didn't disclose the problem. He knows they knew because he learned they had sued the builders and won a settlement, along with other homeowners in the development.
He found it(mold) because a leaking window that was never fixed caused him to have to pull up carpeting, and surprise...mold.
So now he's suing the former owners, the house inspector, and anyone else he can get a nickel out of.....like they say, buyer beware!

Yes, he pm'ed me a couple of months ago and informed me of his pending arrival and short stay here. He says that he's secured housing, a short bicycle ride from campus. I told him that I'd be happy to show him around what little I know of the county. You probably know more. Give me suggestions?

Putting up that window film was a real pain. You really need two people to ensure a properly done job. Make sure you get lots of the liquid needed. Once you have it up, you'll see a real difference.

Liquid? What liquid? Are we talking about the same window film here? The kind that's a thin transparent plastic film that you attach to the window/door frame with double-sided tape and then shrink to a drum-tight skin with a hair dryer?
tee hee...i was wondering the same. my window film instruction didn't say anything about liquid. just tape & hairdryer.
or do you mean it's such a tough job that i'll be panting/sweating...so need to replenish my body with liquid =P

I guess we're not talking about the same beast. The one I'm talking about is a sheet that attaches onto the window pane with the aid of a liquid in a spray bottle. Oops!

It's a Sg game site. www.viwawa.com
If you like word games like scrabble, you'll enjoy groword. Hope to see you there.
ehh...can i check something with you folks...do you tip your trash/recyclable disposable guys? if yes, how do you do it?
and also...do you tip like the cable guy, plumber, painter, electrician etc (on top of what you pay them) when they come and do odd jobs at your house?

not the sanitary engineers. we don't get to see them anyways.
i don't know if it's customary but yeah, we tip anyone who comes into the home to do a service....bell guy, electrician, movers, etc. also at the hair salon and beauty parlor. between 10% - 15%.

I only tip service people every Christmas. I'm not a big tipper. I only give $10 to the sanitation guy, the newspaper carrier, the mailman and the yard guy. I don't tip for one-off jobs.
thanks gurls...for the info.
i wanted to tip just not sure if it's a regular practice here....
jetta: hey $10 is still $10...it's the thought the counts. i'm sure lots of people dun even bother.
Even so, I hate tipping!!!!
It's Sunday, what are you guys up to? I'm taking the neighbours out for a dim sum lunch. The first time I took them, they were baffled at the whole thing but they loved it. This is the 4th time I'm taking them.
I also found a nice ramen shop run by Japanese. Too bad I stumbled on it, four years after moving here. Then I found a Daiso! Hallelujah! The next thing I want to find is a good Indian supermarket. Hope I'm not asking too much.
jetta
ahhhhhh...i'm so jealous of u! oh what i wld do to have a daiso near my place!
i found a great indian restaurant 15min drive away...tasted really authentic...not cheap of course.
i'm still looking for a good japanese food place....i miss jap food much more than i miss singapore food! made a big mistake the other day to buy sushi at Shaw's supermarket...tasted yucky!
Guess what, guess what, guess what? I found three places we used to visit when we lived in Japan!!!!
Firstly, found a nice Japanese supermarket called Mitsuwa . Inside it was a dirty dish store and a small store selling this and that - things that we used to enjoy browsing through. Best of all, there's a small food court by the check out stands. No guesses as to where we'll be hitting the next time we eat out.
Then we found Book-Off! This is a second book store that's really well laid out and organised.
Lost: there are many Indian restaurants here, especially downtown. Most of them are buffet eateries. I've sampled at least three places but none I enjoy enough to head back. So I'm still on the hunt for one.
The problem with having lived in so many cities and different countries, is being a rolling stone, gathering no moss. With our latest discoveries, I guess living here has become a little more bearable.
lucky u!!! i'm so used to having everything within easy grasp back home in singapore....that having to drive 5-10min to amenities can still be a pain although have gotten quite used to it. while our little quiet town is nice & safe....i'm wondering if it might be better to move to a slightly bigger town with more amenities?!
but geez...the property tax can really kill u here...around my area, it's all between $8+ to $11+ (i saw the historial data and there were years when it was as high as $20+) per $1,000....is that normal or considered on the high side? like my rental place...think my landlord is paying at least $6000 per year right now. so that's another push factor for home ownership....
how's your new home coming along......u must be so excited!!!

You're preaching to the choir. As Singaporeans, most of us are used to having things within easy reach. Here you need a car like you need your liver. I live in a small town and it's bugging the heck outta me. I'm a city girl and cannot stand living anywhere too far from the hustle and bustle of a concrete jungle. Unfortunately, in America, the closer to the heart of the city you live brings on more problems. Like the lack of available parking and living on top of each other. I have vowed to never live on top of or below anyone ever again. Apartments here aren't built with solid concrete walls so it's possible to hear your neighbours. No more of that nonsense for me.
CA property tax here is high. It's based on the buying price so you get the picture. With falling property prices, one can submit to have your property tax lowered. I'm happy I did it. Every little bit helps.
I know you're dying to become a homeowner but it's not all that great you know. I don't know how long you'll be stateside, whether you'll be here forever but I know I will be so homeownership was inevitable for us.
