Winter hasn't made landfall in Japan yet except for the Hokkaido regions, temperatures still hovering between the mid 10s.
Kinda disappointed.
Cold here in South Korea...
Now in Wonju, three hours drive from the capital, Seoul...
It's freezing cold now, and snowing...
Last I heard, it is -8 deg C

yup...in MA..near the cape.
I don't like the snow and cold weather.. Makes me feel sleepy and tired all time time.
Besides, I can no longer take 15 mins to prepare for class. After shower still need to dry my hair properly if not my head freeze in the cold.

+1
Winter is a big waste of time. All the layers of clothes to pile on, multiplied by 4 = laundry takes too long. Power bill goes up, etc, etc. Sian, sian, sian.
In other news, So Cal is getting drenched today. We need it so badly.

ya...so much clothes to wash my gawd!...and i really hate to do my laundry in the cold icky basement. why don't people put their washer/dryer in a proper place..out of the cold & spider webs!!
my gas/eletricity bill climbing beyond 200 now...and it's only the beginning of winter...or not yet?

Can't stand basements. Too dark and dank. Poor you. Hang in there.
Have you insulated your windows and power points yet? If there are large gaps between the door and the floor, get a draft dodger?
Winter starts Dec 21 but it may as well be huh?
rained all morning and afternoon, i could barely feel my fingers!
The upper MIdwest, including all of Minnesota, is bracing for the first winter storm of the season. And if the weather forecasts are accurate, it's going to be a whopper, with over 8" of snow and 50 mph winds predicted, creating blizzard conditions, whiteouts, snowdrifts and sub-zero (Farenheit, mind you!) temperatures by tomorrow afternoon.
Should be fun.

and the basement is moist/wet too with a small drainage all around...there's a sump pump that makes funny noises. is it common to have water in the basement or only when the water table is very high? i've seen houses with finished basements...are they prone to moisture?
at least i can access the basement from inside the house....i hate those that you can only get in through a bulkhead from outside. i mean...how do you bring your heap of laundry out and down the bulkhead in the thick of the winter? or do people stop washing clothes in winter??!!!
haven't explored the insulation options. need to go down to lowe/home depot one of these days. i do have some aircon covers that look like large kitchen mittens....do they really work?
just bought some antifreeze stuff to spread on my patio 'cos the snow/ice made it really slippery...almost killed myself the other day if i hadn't grabbed on to the stairs railing.
yup...and it's not even winter yet......what have i gotten myself into???!!...hahahahaha
i'm feeling sorry for the little animals as it's getting cold....so i dropped little chopped pieces of corn all over my backyard last evening...and this morning i looked...all gone! there must be a hell lot of night activities.....

Don't you just hate that? So Cal is waking up to lots of damage from that winter storm that came from Canada. Power outages, downed trees, etc. All from one solid day of rain and super gusty winds. We are drying out today, just in time for part two tomorrow.
Be extra careful MG.

Re: AC covers. Yes you should put them over your ac. Remember that the very vents that allow for air to be pushed into your home are the very same that allow for air to seep in from outside. So absolutely cover the unit. Check the seal around the unit, which you're at it. If it was a self-install, many people skip the insulation part.
The way you describe your basement reminds me of Home Alone. lol. Sorry!

am glad at least someone has a few laughs over it! =)
whenever i go down there....i'd turn on the lights and then look around twice/thrice before i set foot inside.
and usually...i'd rush in there, get my things done...and then get the hell out of there as fast as i can. there are like dead spiders all over....yikes yikes yikes. major goosebums!

The biggest source of heat loss in a house are the windows and doors, especially in older houses that do not have upgraded windows installed.
During the first winter after I moved into my new house back in '96, my monthly gas (heating) bill was averaging nearly $200 per month. A good friend then suggested putting up plastic window insulation film on my windows and patio doors as a way of limiting heat loss. I did this the following winter and saw my heating bill drop to around $120 per month. At the end of the winter, you just pull the film and tape off. Needless to say, I was sold, and have been using the film every winter since then.
Mounting the film takes a bit of time, but it's relatively easy to do and yields significant savings in your energy bills. You might want to give this a try.

Was there any damage to your home from the storm?
The snow's falling pretty steadily outside now, and it's expected to intensify by this evening. The commute home is going to be messy...
weathermen said we are gonna get our FIRST snow storm starting TONIGHT..... good thing i will be working from home tomorrow. i can't see myself driving under those nasty road conditions!!!

Simi train? I ride the express bus between the park-and-ride and downtown. It's a four mile drive from the P&R to my house, so there's still the potential for snow-related traffic snarls.
How much snow are you guys up north expecting?
many thanks, deepak. so kind of you......... ;-)
