LMFAO
Hey guys thanks a mil~ That helped alot! Now I am only waiting for my appointment and fly by July to check out the city.
I heard that Pasadena has more latinos and that area is not as safe as the west LA. Is it true that SMC is easier college to do well in compared to PCC? easier classes etc. I know about the large overseas chinese community living there, jackie chan and jet li lives in Pasadena.
If you guys could choose between PCC and SMC, which would you choose and why? Considering better transfer prospects (U michigan,NYU, UCLA, Berk,USC), livable area, safety, education quality, student life, etc. Would appreciate your answers as I've never been to California. Cheers!

First of all... You need to stop being a racist .
Then you need to ask yourself......
What do you want to MAJOR in for your UNI DEGREE.
Which STATE you want to reside in.
Are you going for the TOP UNI ? Like Harvard, MIT, CALTECH, Yale, Princeton ? Or are you just interested in the University in the state of your choice ?
If you cannot answer these very important question to narrow down the search, then it will be VERY difficult for others to advise you.
For CC selection.. as long as you MAKE SURE that CC has an transfer ARTICULATION AGREEMENT to the UNI of your choice. You have almost a free rein to the location to reside in.
The standard of transfer is determined BY the UNI . So it does not matter which CC you go to. They will all transfer AS LONG AS you scored WELL in ALL YOUR EXAMS and THE UNI ACCEPTED YOUR ENROLLMENT , so MAKE SURE you choose ONLY the TRANSFERABLE courses !!
Is there any reason why you chosen PCC or SMC, why not San Diego or Orange County Colleges ? Why Southern California instead of Northern California ?And why California instead of Washington ?
If you have specific requirements like staying close to Asian community.. that will be your limitation to your residence and choice of CC. Remember USA is a VERY big country. CA itself will take you more than 10 hours to drive from North to South, there's A LOT of Asian community in CA.
If you just want huge Asian Community on the West.. then San Francisco has the biggest number of Asians. Then there's also Washington and Hawaii .. LOL... too much choices !!!
After you have selected your school nearby your "limitation" .. then you consider which part of town you want to live in. All cities are livable.. if it's NOT livable.. nobody would be crazy enough to live there !
Rule of thumb. The closer you are to the ocean .. the better it is. The more Inland you go in California.. the cheaper the housing.. and the higher the lower income density.
The more metropolitan and closer to ocean , the more expensive in living cost.
Each states has several cities, within it there's good and not so good neighbourhood, and it can be just a street away from each other. LOOK AT THE Neighbourhood SCHOOL RATINGS in THAT neighbourhood. Typically the better the rating.. the nicer the neighbourhood.. and the higher the rentals.
Here's a simple reference for Education rankings.
When you come to USA.. ALWAYS keep an OPEN mind.
you WILL experience CULTURE SHOCK.
And you WILL realise a lot of thing are DIFFERENT to what you are used to in tiny Singapore.
And I want to remind you , Future Students of USA.
Do NOT mess around with the GANGS.
They are not like the toothless gangsters in Singapore.
The ones in USA are dangerous. So stay away from DRUGS and GANGS if you want to have a future and live to a ripe old age.
Be SAFE ! And don't forget your manners !!!
Here a new article
For the new comers.. get yourself a decent GPS when you arrive here.

May grey, June gloom.... all before the sweltering summer heat. I'd rather all this than snow. *nudge nudge MG*
And when I say summer heat, it's nothing like the heat in Sg, it's hotter.
ke1234: Why do you come visit us and see? CA is a huge and very diverse melting pot. Just come with an open mind, use common sense and expand your horizons.
Jojobeach has an excellent suggestion on getting a good GPS system. Life on the roads got much easier for me once I got mine.
if you want lots of chinese students around you all you have to do is take a 7hr flight down to melbourne lol
naah Ain't a racists here. I wouldn't want only to mix with chinese as I prefer to live in cosmo environment its just that when one tend to hear alot I guess its normal to stereotype especially I've never been there to check out those places before deciding where to settle down at. Pardon me for being a "racist" haha
Aussie has never been an ideal destination for education for me though the future looks very bright on their economy in the coming years.
My plan is to purchase a property and sell it when I graduate thats when the economy recovers. I guess Santa Monica area is a more attractive destination for me. I am a SG PR having lived here for abt 15 years and am sick of this tiny island. I am looking forward to live and enjoy my time in land of freedom. Will definately get a GPS when I am there.
Appreciate all the answers provided by jojobeach and jetta. I am intending to major in Business & Logistics field thus I am still keeping an option open for transfers to universities after CC.Such a pity american system doesn't recognize Poly diploma having wasted 3 years here. I am anticipating the culture shocks knowing no city is the same anywhere in the world.
Anyway, are you guys all singaporeans living in the US or CA? Sorry for asking as I am totally new to this sgforum community.

Oh.. you got SICk of Singapore hor? Well that's too bad.. I am a Singaporean. Thank you for being SICK of my beloved country. I am also very SICK of you.
Your kind of attitude is CMI ( Cannot make it) here in USA.
There's a LOT more to learn.. But seeing how UNGRATEFUL a person you are... I think it's better I leave you alone.
Best regards.
Jojo.

You sure about that? When I came here for my undergrad degree back in '91, the coursework from my poly studies took care of my freshman year and about half of my sophomore year, resulting in my having to take only about 2 years to get my undergrad degree. And this was at a major midwestern university too.
Don't worry about culture shock.Singapore's about as cosmopolitan as any major city in the US, so if you survived in Singapore, you should fit in fine here. Just make sure you leave any traces of kiasuness behind in Singapore.

I would venture that most of the forumites responding in this thread are, or will soon be, located in the US. I'm currently in MinneSNOWta.

Alamak.. why you go tell him so much ? Let him start from the bottom mah....Singapore Poly Diplomas are useless only to people who are too stupid to make good use of it.
And sorry hor.. I see so many immigrants with his kind of CMI attitude.. all end up in the armpits of the cities and can only huddle together with their own type like a bunch of sheeps.

I'd like to think of it as giving ke1234 the benefit of the doubt, despite his rather boorish comment about being sick of Singapore. Who's to say he won't find his "niche in life" in the US and make it big here?

hey he's going to community college, thats means he screwed up his grades like me :P well technically i dropped outta jc
No, If you want Guiness.. ya go to Ireland.
Now we know why those Indonesian chinese got kicked out of their own country. They just never learn. And I used to feel sorry for them..frak that.
If they want to be treated like a Prince.. best is STAY in ASIA.
Those rich Indonesian brats who survived on their daddy's supplementary credit card may be enjoying their upper class priviledge in ASIA.. the moment they come to USA.. they'll be nothing but a middle-class NOBODY.
And these are the idiots who give us Asians a bad rep.
