What is the "Real" Singapore fried noodles?
Can anyone figure out?
What was the creator of this "name" dish really wanted to replicate " A " unique taste that he/she experienced when he/she was in Singapore?
There are many versions of the Singapore fried noodles out here. A more common acceptance seemed to be fried Vermicelli
When I was a kid, my favorite night snack was a Malay guy pushing a cart frying Mee goreng with bean sprout n egg. With "half" a small green lime n hot spicy chillies. (macpherson)
Local breaksfast Vermicelli with soya sauce and bean sprout with a sunny side up egg or spam.
A more elaborate fried vermicelli with onions,egg,prawn,chai sew etc.
The worst kind:
If you ever walk into a HKG or Chinese owner restaurant your Singapore fried noddles most likely taste like this
Fried Been Hoon and throw in bunch of curry powder. And called it Singapore noodle.
I can only speculate to this question.
Could it be a singaporean students who study oversea back in the 70's and was home sick and crank up this stove and fried Vermicelli and since back in the 70's hot food isn;t that common he open his only spicy from Home ---- curry powder. and throw it into the fried Vermicelli/noddles.
And served to all international students. And they CALLED IT -- The Singapore Noddles.

yes all the more that this dish was created either by a foreigner or overseas.
Ur fried noodles is beehoon fried with curry powder ?
well, we have this thing called xin zhou mi fen at zhi char stalls here...
but it isnt like the singapore noodles u described.

I tried this said "Singapore Fried Noodles" in Oz
I think I only ate like 1/4 plate *makes a face*
My ang mo friends seem to love it a lot and I couldn't phatom what they were talking about because nothing here fits their description.
The taste is....out of this world *cringes*

I think i got try before.
But it should be called friend beehoon eh.. lol.. or fried vermicilli then be called fried noodles. Cause i expected noodles.. big or small n came out beehoon.
My other thoery about this Dish "Singapore Fried Noddles" could be a chinese tourist back in the early days came to singapore and tasted mee goreng and replica it in a chinese way.
singapore noodles is a marketing term overseas which refers to the types of noodles in singapore.
It is not just one fixed dish. it could be mee goreng, hokkien noodles, or anything which calls it self 'fried"
it's a scam in other countries to con the locals who don't know better

i agree with this. Their so called singapore fried noodles or hokkien noodles dont taste like singapore at all. In singapore they use lard to bring out the taste. In OZ, they dont.
Just like in singapore where some kopitiams claim to sell western spagetti but dont really taste like the ones intheir own country.
i had singapore noodle in dandenong last week; cooked by a southern china migrant and it tasted heavenly.

You might find authentic stuff in the suburbs but in shopping centres or uptown areas, most often you dont.
Using lard, lots of soy sauce and chilli will leave a bad taste in the ang moh's mouth. So they tone down a bit .
think this dish created in hk ages ago...and when these hkies migrated, they oso bring this dish overseas.
i was also puzzled when I first arrive in UK and saw 'Singapore Fried Noodles' on the menu... tried it... ok lor... like what some of u said here, just assing curry powder to fried vermicelli.... ddin even know that we have such a 'famous' dish out of singapore.... was talking to an colleague of Indian origins and he said that he has also never heard of 'Madras Chicken' when he was in India as well....
i had it in australia NSW....it was yucks...i couldn't eat it after just a couple mouth fulls. i also tried the fried kuai teow (wonder why the strange spelling?!) and it was just kway teow swimming in lotsa sweet sauce...was equally bad. nasi goreng was like curry soaked risotto....why oh why can't i find decent authentic asian food in australia??! i was there for 2 weeks and my appetite was so bad 'cos of all the unappetising food that i hardly ate much...think i must have lost weight for the first time during my travel.

well...'cos i'm sick of "australian" food obviously...there's just so much to try...even after kangaroo and croc meat...what else do you recommend?
