Hello.
I'll be going over to Melbourne to study at RMIT (city campus) in June 2009.
I understand that RMIT doesn't have on-campus accommodation facilities.
How do I go about looking and securing a place to live in? What do people usually do to secure accommodations? What are the things that i need to be careful of. Basically, anything regarding accomodation will be of great help to me.
Thank you!
Since it's in town, accommodation is generally more expensive. There are a few you can look at:

Since this is your first year, it might be worth just paying more to live near uni to allow yourself to familiarise with the environment. Once you know the place well enough, you can always rent and share a unit/apartment further away from the city with your friend(s).
Good luck!
You can try using google map to give yourself some ideas how far the accommodation is from your uni. Just enter the full address in the search box.

i am currently looking for housing there. it is a real pain dealing with real estates agent. still be sellers' market out there.
any tips on how to get ahead of the queue and also what i can do to be more favorably considered?
i can't wait for to get pass this phase on settling down here. what a pain in the axx....
sorry, dun mean to hijack this thread. will pm you separately later, hnymse.
thanks!
Thank you honeymouse.
Anyway, i'll only be at the city campus for 1 sem. After which, i'll be spending 2 years at bundoora campus.
reddust, what kind of accommodation are you looking for?

hehe...funnycar, my requirements are quite diffirent from yours. i came with my entire family and a container of stuff on its way. so, i am looking for a house/townhouse which i hope to stay for a year before deciding if it is a good time to buy in '09.
my priorities are proximity to school and my workplace, though i work from home. my office is in forest hill. so, i am looking for a place in an eastern suburb.
best wishes to your find. may you have better luck than me!

ic, so you're relocating yea?
Anyway, is it neccessary to rent a place under the Residential Tenancies Act? If yes, how do i ensure that the landlord and agent are indeed renting out the place to me under the Act? I'm assuming that the Act is a government policy to protect both landlord and tenant?
honestly speaking, it's not easy to find accomodation near to rmit. Be prepared to have numerous house viewing end up not getting any.
You could get places near to Melbourne Central or near University of Melbourne. Sub-urbs could be of your choice too. Leichester street, bourke street, little collins street etc. Good luck in finding one
