Talking with streamie about this and I realise that I don't have any here. I've come to realise that we may be from the same country but may not connect. And besides the Singapore/Malaysia club (they are so clique-y) I haven't come across too many Singaporeans here. You guys overseas in the same boat?
generally speaking singaprean are never clicks together. But u can organized a weekend BBQ and my wife n i will drive down.....

If I do organize a bbq, you, your wife and I will be the only Singaporeans.
I don't have that many friends from my hometown either.... may be 2 or 3. Only 1 of them, that I really get in touch with every so often.
I don't see my friend very often anyway as we all work during the week so weekend is usually family time.
I think missy Rhonda is the winner at the moment as she's the only friend I see the most. Sometimes I also catch up with bear's sister.
neither do I... we tend to be low key... was on the business council... but too much politics for such a small organization... and the president back says a lot but has no substance...
any Singaporeans in Oz going for the Singapore Day in Melbourne?
the only singaporean i hang out with is my gf whom is heading back to sg soon. i have yet to head down to this coffee joint down my street, the owner is singaporean i heard.

I know missy Rhonda is. She has invited me to come along. I am not sure if I will be going or not for 2 reasons - too lazy to come in to the city (though it's in St Kilda) on the weekend and I am not a Singaporean.
Are you coming?
All my S'porean frens become homesick, went back SG. Left only 1 whom I try to minimize contact (She loves to compare Oz to SG). Those close and reliable frens are non-S'poreans. Funny, though of different nationalities, I feel more attached to, and comfortable with these non-Singaporeans. Even got presents on Rahki Day (Indian Brother Day) from my 'brothers'. Hehe.
Guess true friendship transcends nationalities... remember Jetta, u once asked me what I will miss about Melbourne most... I miss my friends there.
some of the singkies like to vanish from sight ... a few pretended to be CBCs ....
I guess I was ambivalent about meeting other singkies ....
err, wat is CBCs?
canadian version of ABC ...
The only Singaporeans I've encountered since coming to MN in '91 were those who were part of a larger group of students from the U of M that I bumped into at a restaurant waaaay out in the boonies some years back.
I'm sure there are other Singaporeans/ex-Singaporeans living and working here in the Twin Cities, but I've yet to bump into any of them.
I've encountered a number of Malaysians through the years, though, most recently last Saturday at our gun club. Our club was hosting an Open House event whereby non-members could visit and shoot a variety of firearms under supervision for free. I was helping out at the pistol range when a large group of Chinese approached and wanted to try out some guns. They were chattering amongst themselves in Cantonese, and revealed that they were Malaysians when I asked.

SG kinda of blend in and scattered until we open out mouth.
I suspect average about 50 to 100 SG studying, working, living in various cities in N.A. The popular cities such as NY, SFO, LA, will have more than 400 to a thousand. Some of these folks spend 30 yrs or more in the states n they are retired.

While working at Sears, I was helping this Asian customer. Soon as she spoke I knew knew knew that she was either Singaporean or Malaysian. After getting to know her better, I asked that question of her and she revealed that she is Malaysian. Even after 2 decades of living in America, she has a strong accent. She ended up inviting me to her place for Christmas where I met ten or so of her Malaysian kakis. Good grief, the topic kept going back to how they dislike Malaysia, the bumis, why they gave up their passports, etc.

I can relate. When Singaporeans get together, sooner or later the topic will veer towards Singapore and comparisons. It's funny though. When they speak to me, they speak normally. Soon as they turn to speak to my hubby, something happens to their tongues and this accent comes out from nowhere.

It's not a 2nd cup, she roast her beans on site. Pretty good i heard.. It's on Ossington and queen. Come visit me at my restaurant ! I'm now working at Gossip Restaurant @ the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE).

My hubster spent 3 years in Sg and understands some Singlish but... he uses some in the wrong context. He loves to spiak Singlish at home though and his favourite expression is "haiyah!". He loves it so much it slips out alot when he's at work. His ang mo co-workers have no idea what he's saying.
