would you like to explain to me why the ipod is still more expensive in other countries, like the UK, New Zealand, Australia, than in the US ....
or that it's much more expensive in Europe than in the US ... and indeed, even in Singapore too ? ....
go check it out ....
are they practising bad governance, bad monetary policy ? should i ask our goverment, you the economist, or apple corporation ? ...
Are you sure Australian ipods are more expensive than Singapore?
FYI, UK is not a free port, it imposes tariffs for imports. UK also has a higher cost due to higher living standards, surely you don't expect to compare Singapore's standard of living to UK. The price of petrol is also high by global standards.
Why not compare free ports like Hong Kong?
Hong Kong iPod 8GB = HKD 1,550 = SGD 281.17
http://store.apple.com/hk/browse/home/shop_ipod/family/ipod_nano?mco=MTIwMDQ
Singapore iPod 8GB = SGD 318

I said more expensive than the US, read it again ...
because you alleged that apple is practising differential pricing cos of currency risks, then why in all of the countries i listed to you, ipods costs so more in USD terms than in the US ? .... those countries have a floating exchange rates too btw ...
and if you say higher costs' due to higher living standards ....
then since ipod is cheaper in australia than in Singapore and the UK, and you were trying to say the neccessities are still cheaper in australia than in singapore in this thread .... are you saying that the standard of living is lower there ? ...
back to the question then ....
why are ipods more expensive in most other countries, including singapore, than in the US ? ....
can it all be blamed on their respective goverments ? ...
you want an ipod, you work for it ...
you want an ipod, you work for it ...
or better
you get other people to work for it, but you own it

I added something else about UK.
UK is not a free port, it has tariffs and it's GST (VAT) is 17.5%.
If it's so hard for you to understand that monetary policies has a direct impact on the citizen's lives, I am willing to accept your theory that god through his "invisible hands" manages the exchange rate, inflation and interest rates.
So your only other country of contention is UK?
Also don't forget that Australia and New Zealand has higher GST than Singapore, but their ipods are still priced competitively. If you remove all elements of taxes, the iPods would be cheaper than Singapore.
Hong Kong has no GST and a free port, the iPod cost SGD 281.17 even with a GST of 7% it would end up cheaper than Singapore.

but do you see the common thread among all the countries i listed ? ... strike off UK if you wish, ipods are still more expensive in the countries compared to the US home ground, it's not just Singapore .... all of these countries have floating exchange rates ... so back to the question, is it all their goverment's faults too ? ... were they doing something wrong in their foreign exchange policies ? ...
to me, your premise of the goverment's monetary policies affecting the price of the ipod you want to buy is like blaming the goverment for the death of your pet hamster ....
and i find it contradicting that you can associate high standards of living with high costs in the UK, but can whine about how neccessities are cheaper in australia than in Singapore in this thread ....
either you simply have an axe to grind with our powers-that-be, and are determined to grind it no matter what, or you have a problem about what you think the world (or rather the goverment) owes you ....

I didn't check the rest, but are you very sure Australia is cheaper?
Maybe you can provide you calculation for us to verify.
All your countries = Australia and New Zealand?
Excluding Hong Kong which doesn't support your argument.
2) In free market economics, there is no reason for Apple to vary the price of it's iPod unless it's due to risk in the market. The risk that the SGD could be undervalued and the product sold in Singapore cannot convert back to the USD cost.

Ahem..... thanks for insulting your own fellow Singaporeans and by the way, I am not Singaporean! I realised you seem to like making assumptions....

Oh well, have a look at the website.... and check if we are more expensive or not.

It's difficult to make comparisons based on those shops, it is expensive, but still cheaper than Apple (Australia) online. The same case with Singapore, consumers can get their ipods from Sim Lim which is relatively cheaper than Apple (Singapore) online.
**I am only looking at ipod nanos, not all the ipods.
Australia is not a free port like Singapore and Hong Kong.

at 249 AUD, it works out to 215 USD, which is still more than 199, you were getting exchange rates from the fellow at the mama shop ? or you were comparing 4 gigs and 8 gigs models ? ....
so back to the uncomfortable question ....
why is the price still higher than the US ? ... if by your corollary, bad governance, bad monetary policies caused you to have to pay more for an ipod in Singapore ... why are the ozzies, and the other countries l listed, paying more as well ? ...
and since we are at australia, kindly respond to this sentence here too .... copied from above
" and i find it contradicting that you can associate high standards of living with high costs in the UK, but can whine about how neccessities are cheaper in australia than in Singapore in this thread " ....
I think it really boils down to your attitude ... stop blaming others and circumstances, and strive more for yourself, you'd be a happier person ....

USD 199???
I think you are the one getting your rates from mama shop.
USD 1 = SGD 1.60
I have lots of USD to trade.
I am willing to accept USD 1 = SGD 1.55.
Do you want to trade?
A spread of 5 cents from your quote, a gain of 5 cents for you.
Maybe, just maybe you are mathematically challenged like most P4P followers.
At the rate you are going, you will soon be on par with Gazelle or lionnoisy.
This is so ironic, someone without finding out the facts from TS, called him mathematically challenged, in the end he was the one who is mathematically challenged.
TS:
Only one adage for you.
He who laughs last laughs the best.
Fatum,
Please continue. I need entertainment from my mundane existence.
Life in Speakers' Corner hasn't been the same since Gazelle left us.

If you mean university education, they are not free. The local students will have to pay back as soon as they start working.

They still don't show USD 1 = SGD 1.60!!!
How deluded are we?
Tsk tsk.......

oh ? ... weren't it you who posted 1.6 ? .... are you schizophrenic ? .... this is getting funny ...
i think 28k/yr in australia is very low salary for a uni grads.
most of my relative earning around 36-45k/yr in WA.
frankly to earn 112k( 4yr) doesnt need 7-8 year to earn ah. if u r good enough. maybe 1.5yr you can get that kind of salary in singapore. i think there are more oppt in sg than ade. However in career, hardwork and luck do play part.
400k for a landed property, yes that true, unless you pay by cash. if u take loan for a 9% interest? u better do the maths before u buy one.
its true, electronics items are cheaper in aust than sg, as far as i know. car is cheaper, petrol is cheaper, groceries i think the same or cheaper unless u buy chinese groceries such as rice, century egg and etc.

You said USD 199 for the Singapore 8GB iPod nano, being cheaper than Australia's 8GB iPod nano on the Apple online website.
Since when is the 8GB iPod nano sold in Singapore at USD 199?
The 8GB iPod nano sold in Apple Singapore online site is SGD 318 (USD 223.94).
By saying that the iPod in Singapore cost USD 199, you are implying an exchange rate of USD 1 = SGD 1.60.
There is no need to thank me for correcting you idiocy.

oh, I thought you were foolishly getting quotes from some shady mama shop .... but it turned out that you simply dind't know how to read .....
that USD 199 is for US ipods, figure from you btw .... I have always said that ipods in these countries are more expensive than in the US, or perhaps you don't really know how to read ? ...
or is this flip-flopping trying to get away from the uncomfortable question ? ....
here we go, THIRD time I'm asking this now ....

Then again these prices are still more expensive than Singapore.
Moreover did you remove the tariff rates for the iPod nano sold in Australia?

after tax, u will get around 25- 30 K. dont state directly from job ads. Also depends on which state u working in. I think WA, are short of labour, so expect more. They advertise as 50K is the salary given without tax. Btw if u are just starting dont expect to get a lot of money but fairly fair amount by aussie standards
