after graduate is where the real fun started. most employer are willing to hire u if u are available full time. This doesnt happen until u graduate.
I think what you meant in your initial post was, you only had $400 budget to use, you paid $300 for rent, $200 for other expenses and the shortfall is made up from your part time work as a student.

lets compare prices in singapore. someone post them thanks
Hard to compare especially it's different conversion rate. Certain things should be cheaper in Oz than in Singapore cos' there have local produce. Then again, the beef in Oz is super expensive even though Oz has their own cattle farm.

so how long did you spend in australia in total, and how long did it take you to finish your degree ? ....
2 years in Uni with exemptions + 4 years working = 6 years
had to come back to Sg, since started to feel homesick. But just temporary. I dont have any other commitments as i have a home on my own in sg.

are u sure, Beef is cheaper than lamb currently, fish but usually 1 KG of fish goes for around $12- $18.

I don't know about that. I think lamb is cheaper. But I might be wrong. I don't eat red meat very often....
Kangaroo is not bad too...

some folks like lionnoisy were comparing cost of living.
he said necessities in Australia are more expensive than Singapore.
i did conversion over to SG dollars before and most of the basic necessities are cheaper.
Australia is only expensive if have all your meals in restaurants.
Australian beef sold in Singapore is expensive, Australian beef sold in Australia is cheap by comparison.

Nearly the same for Germany
I guess it's important to consider that different necessities are for different countries

someone who just arrived in Aust will find it expensive, but in the long term they will realise as they adjust to the basic life style living cost that its cheaper than sg.
But i can say aust is good for its citizens especially those old people or students studying as they get subsidised fees for Uni and get a payment every month when studying.
old people get subsidised for almost everything including transport.
its not good for those filthy rich or high income earner as they get taxed heavily. In this singapore is a better place for the rich and famous.
Aust is a country which upholds moral obligations to society.

It's getting more and more expensive living in Australia. Food is getting very expensive. We just spent over $80 on the weekend on a few items including 2 loaves of bread, 3 tubs of Ski yoghurt, 1 x 2L milk, T-bone steak, 4 x canned tuna, 1 tub of icecream, 3kg of orange, vegies). That's not even our full shopping....
Why is it that prices in Singapore is more expensive relative to other countries?
Let's look at the iPod, in the Apple (Singapore) website a 8GB iPod Nano cost SGD 318, while the same model cost USD 199 (SGD 282.58 @ USD 1 = 1.42).
http://store.apple.com/sg/browse/home/shop_ipod/family/ipod_nano?mco=MTIwMDQ
http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_ipod/family/ipod_nano?mco=MTE2NTY
Why the stark difference in prices? Afterall iPod is manufatured in China, it should be cheaper to ship to Singapore than the USA.

tried kangaroo before, but cannot remember the price.

Believe me, it's much worse in Singapore.

One possible reason that I can give since I'm in the manufacturing industry.
Some of them are manufactured and assembled in China for the rest of the world, and some of them are manufactured and assembled in the USA

it because in the shops in sg they are selling higher , the price drops fast in sg electronics consumer brand and there is a huge 2nd hand market like HWZ buy and sell forums in singapore.
u will be surprised they are selling brand new $600 centrino laptops 1.73 Ghz with Nvidia Geforce 6 graphic card at Officeworks store here in Aust. with 1 year warranty. Look at sg Courts dept store and their sucky exp prices. and when the model turns old, they remove it from the shelves and always trying to push new exp products down your throat like someone doing a deepthroat job. bastads.
the removed products from sg shops end up in other countries like Aust, Africa ect. This is the shady lucrative business model which these shops have.
to all the bros, in sg, the income vs purchasing power just doesnt match up, andnor worth at all . Thats all i can say.
i earn double in Aust, afford cheap car, stay in rental, and grocery and electronic are almost or same price as in Sg. best think can earn landed home with garden and garage for 400K

two words : differential pricing

There are few ways of looking at this.
1) It could be the result of the government's policy of maintaining a "dirty float" (managed foreign exchange intervention).
2) In free market economics, there is no reason for Apple to vary the price of it's iPod unless it's due to risk in the market. The risk that the SGD could be undervalued and the product sold in Singapore cannot convert back to the USD cost.
Jus curious....
-Are the prices u quoted current? Or was it when u were still in uni.
-Why quote melbourne prices when u live in adelaide...
-200$/mth on other things is jus amazing.. abt $7/day plus transportation... its quite hard to beat that even in singapore...
-erm... whats ur point har? are u encouraging us to go aust study/work or what?...

It used to be low in the past, because of reduction in money supply due to CPF contributions, but all these are going to change once the first batch of retirees have access to their CPF.
The accounts of those CPF members about to retire in 5 to 15 years:
Above 60 = $9.7 billion
55 - 60 = $14.8 billion
50 - 55 = $24.9 billion

Those sub 2% inflation of the 1980s will be well over.

doesnt add up to $80. btw u did not mention how much quantity those items consist of.
U earn 3 - 4K, own $2000 car, and u still complain $80 too expensive?
do u know how many students are surviving on just $100 on food (not eating outside) every month in Aust?
btw if food get too exp, aust govt will intervene . But in Sg, they start to earn money from food as well.

Ummm.... I did mention the quantity, thank you.
Also, did I mention anyway how much I earn every month? Please do not make assumption!

so with regards to the point of living costs in Singapore .... you're saying that it's still the goverment's fault ? ....
in anycase, your logic is faulty for 2), if the Singapore dollar is undervalued, then there is pressure on the SGD to appreciate against other currencies, in this example the USD, so apple'd get back more in USD terms if they convert from SGD to USD and count profits in terms of USD back home.
but yeah, I get it, everything is the goverment's fault, right ? ...
