really...the SG police will accede to such requests for reference letters??!!
Ermmm, thats the CNCC I typed about.
Bring your hubby's employment letters, that letter to state that your family is moving with him to USA. Bring down to Cantonment Police Complex, 2nd floor near to the Canteen. Bring ICs and BCs and employment letters if you can.
Bring about $50/-. They can prepare the CNCC for you and hub within 2 hours.
And do the International Driving Licence the one day before you fly, so it covers your one year before you can get a US driving licence.
This will depend on you, but do get a motorcycle licence too, so you can get a scooter that can help you on small grocery errands.
Depends on whats near you, Asian Supermarkets like Ranch 99 is cool to get some cheena cooking stuffs.
Ross is great to get cheap discount clothes.
Costco requires membership, but you really get get lots of stuffs very cheap. They have even started selling coffins.
Target is a better quality then Walmart.
Oh....and if you wear glasses or contacts, get your glasses in sg and have someone in sg knows which shop is your preference and that the shop has yur prescription so that when you runs out in USA, can get friends/family to send you glasses from sg.
I've forgotten....
If you will be renting out your place. Here's how.
Move out of your place at least a week and have the tenants move in within that week so you guys can sort out most arrangements. Do be prepared that the moment you rent, if you want to come back, you have to rerenovate your place so dont leave any items that is precious to you to the tenants.
Terminate the TV licence and infd the tenants that if they want tv, they can apply for the licence themselves. Or you might want to Giro them taxes thing so you wont miss those payments.
oh yeah by the way if you get catch by traffic police with a international driving license chances is that u might not get a ticket. MASS Pike highway patrol are really really really bad.......

ohh...i really want to learn to ride a bike so that i can scoot around in US...but hubby totally against it i thot it'd be easier for me to explore the area on a scooter and it uses less fuel too.
good advice regarding the glasses/contacts lens prescription. will let me family/friends know so that i can always ask them for help if needed. is it very expensive to make glass in US?
coffins at the marts??!!! haha...what a laugh! shows that you really can buy anything and everything in those mega marts! think i'll freak if i see rows of aisles with coffins while i'm doing grocery shopping

Not really. The eyewear business is pretty competitive here in the US, and you can usually get a good deal on prescription glasses, especially if you keep an eye out (no pun intended!) for coupons in the papers and promotional mailings.
To give you an example, I recently had two pairs of prescription eyeglasses (with lightweight, impact- and scratch-resistant plastic lenses, no tinting) made at a local eyewear chain for just a smidge over $150, inclusive of the eye exam.
How does this compare to the cost of having glasses made in Singapore?

ohh...that sounds pretty decent! my glasses made in singapore are all $200+. perhaps the quality might be different? or that i always get ripped off in singapore?...but i'm totally ok with going for the more budget ones. anyway...a pair of glasses can last me for years and years (on average, i use one pair for at least 2-3 years, sometimes even longer)!
how about the cost of contact lens? i use monthly disposable ones. i pay about $150 for 14 pairs.

that's amazing...i never knew they do that. you folks are really a wealth of knowledge and experience!!!! actually...if the police can do something like that...i wonder if our local banks can also provide such reference letter to reflect our good credit history in singapore?! just a thought....
Depending on your flights, some only allow 1 luggage bag with a certain weight limit.
Some flights allow for 2 luggage bags for check in. So watch your packing to include only the necessary and then some that have sentimental values for you.

yah...someone was telling me that based on her own experiences...paying for excesss luggage can be super expensive on certain flights bound for US. so in the end...she'd rather just pay for another plane ticket to enjoy the additional luggage allowance!!!
My last trips, I used army kit bags which is cheap at about S$12 at the army market. They are pretty useful for lugging around clothes.
Get a decent 29 inch hard luggage for your precious/breakable stuffs, avoid jewelleries in them and have a towel in your handcarry that is convenient to take out of the handcarry. The towel is good to rest your head on in the plane.
My experiences wise, JAL to Narita is very comfy with flight entertainments.
The Japan to USA leg of the journey might be more cramped and dont have as good service so you are better off with some muscle relaxant to sleep on the flight.

Re: glasses
All this time, I've been getting my glasses thru the mail from my regular optical place in Sg. But but but, since I became a Costco member, it's cheaper to get it done through them. I did the math and even after postage, Costco wins hands down.
