Am thinking of moving back to Singapore from Melbourne. Had been living here for 6 years. Wonder if those that relocate back to Singapore has a difficult time adapting? Still deciding now as there are many factors to consider. Weather, work, salary.
Do you mind my asking the reason(s) for your wanting to return to Singapore?
If you've been living in a temperate part of Australia, I'm thinking it may be a challenge readapting to the oppressive heat and humidity in Singapore.
I don't think I can ever return to Singapore namely because of the weather. I love experiencing the four seasons, and absolutely hate the heat and humidity of Singapore. I fall sick so often back in Singapore.
I think my body is saying, STAY!
I agree. Work and salary issues are largely within one's control. Not the weather, though.

Doesn't apply to nurses. Nurses are treated like sh!t in Singapore and don't even get me started on the salary, which is a royal insult.
I know of nurses who had to return to Singapore because of family, but they don't settle in well and they end up returning to Melbourne to work, or they take on jobs in private clinics because they cannot tolerate working in the Singapore hospitals.
this is Rhonda's first post in SO ...

Mainly because of family. My dad passed away a few months back. And I have started to wonder if I should make the move back for my remaining parent. I am here, but I always worried about her. Though I have other siblings in Singapore, they are hardly home. If I moved back, I might have to take a pay cut, and re-adapt to Singapore working culture.
depending on the field you're in, and the stage of your career ..... "pay cut" can be a monumental piece of understatement ....

I am in Marketing and Sales. Is the pay in Singapore really that bad?
I enjoy too much freedom and rather fantastic flexibility at work here that I can never EVER dream of enjoying back in Singapore. Nah... I won't head back... no way, José!

I agree with you regarding the weather part. Singapore weather is terrible. Actually it's funny that you actually mentioned nursing. Cos I was contemplating taking up a Nursing Diploma in Singapore so that I can be employable when I come back to Melbourne in future. Any advice regarding the difference in taking a dip here and S'pore?
What is your current residency status in Australia? If you are presently a PR or citizen of that country, you could always return there after discharging your familial obligations in Singapore.
Just thinking out loud...
welcome home

I was looking at a 65% pay cut with some offers ..... but then again, i'm in the IT, Singapore is awashed with cheap foreign talents in the technical fields ...... so there ....
as for others, you'd certainly be competing against cheap ang mohs ..... remember what they say in oz ? ... failed in Sydney ? try Singapore .....
maybe you should get yourself on the radar screens of local head-hunters first before making the big move .....
but having said that ... you'd certainly be paying a lot less income tax too ... comparatively ...

If you're serious about doing Nursing, do it in Melbourne. The training isn't better, and in fact, clinically, the standards of the nursing grads are much poorer than back in Singapore, but as you'll be studying in THEIR Uni, they kinda cut you more slack, in a sense.
It's definitely much more expensive to study here, but you can HEX it. Besides, it is so much easier to pass your clinical attachments here. Nursing stress in Singapore is unbelievable and extremely unreasonable.
Besides, if your goal is to remain in Melbourne, it makes more sense to train here.

I am a PR here... I am caught in the midst of a very hard decision.... My hubby is here... and will not be able to return to S'pore. Has to complete his CPA. S'pore working hours does not allows one to complete the CPA in peace.
what about the children ....
children are a lot more resilent to changes when they are younger .....

Singapore's worklife does not allow anyone to do anything much outside work.

Well, I was thinking of doing nursing, when I saw my dad on his deathbed in a private hospital in S'pore, full of foreign talents, and not being able to communicate properly with him. Seriously, I think SGH was so much better as compared to those expensive private hospital. I was surfing the internet for getting started in a nursing course. But I am totally lost and do not know where to start. Do I start with a cewrt in Nursing?

How old is your mother? Any chance of convincing her to move to Australia to be with you?

Mum is 58. She finds Melbourne boring. The only places she loves here are high maintenance. Crown Casino. Shopping in expensive shopping belts, and Alfresco in Lygon Street (little Italy). She likes the convenience in S'pore
