Welcome to the netherlands!
Its summer here now and its quite hot nowadays with temperature that hovers between 10-24 degrees celcius. For the past few days, we were lucky enough to get some sun, but I would recommend you getting a jacket that will keep you warm and at the same time, something that is ideally rain-proof and/or wind-proof. Dun worry about looking like a complete dork, we all look like dorks here anyway! hahahhaha!
Since you will be here for winter as well, remember to pack warm clothes.. Do take note that the "cold wear" stores at suntec or something, might not be warm enough for you. Dun worry too much about that for a start since you are coming here in a few days anyway and its still summer. if it gets too cold, its socially perfectly acceptable to layer on many clothes like a bak-chang as well
Look for H&M stores thats all over the country, they originate from Sweden, and is cheap and cool among the student population here.
Which school in einhoven will you be doing your exchange then?
People in einhoven and amsterdam sounds very different due to regional accents.
Hey, einhoven is the place with many many many phillips department! pst... remember to bring home a Phillips "senseo" coffee/tea machine. its very cool and cheap and its something Singapore does not have! Also, in case your host family is not asian, you might want to bring along a little rice cooker... a rice cooker is dificult to find and it cost about 85euros. crazy!
Good dutch word to learn for today: GRATIS (pronouned "GH-rah-tis", with the spitting "GHRrrr" sound)
Good luck!

HAHAHAHA!
i stay near amsterdam, but been to einhoven. i think the einhoven people speaks funny in dutch... could hardly contain my giggles everytime i talk to them.

Lol! That should help thanks!Originally posted by lethalpoppy:well, cant blame the bicycle thieves for stealing certain bikes. if it doesnt have at least 2 or 3 hardcore locks, and/or its not parked properly, then the bike/owner is just waiting for it to get stolen.
I have seen kids unravelling others' locks, not to steal it, but just to throw the bikes into the canals and it always end in guffaws something along the lines of "that'll teach them a lesson for not parking their bikes properly!"
oh yeah, in case you are a yellow person, remarks by the terrible intolerant high school kids (usually again, on bicycles and in groups) are common.
In response to stuffs like "poep chinees" (pronouced vaguely as bpooop shi-naes, meaning chinese shit), "rijst poeper" (pronounced vaguely as raeist bpooop-per, meaning rice shitter),
just say "Hoi, je moeder is vaking lelijk" (pronouced vaguely as Hoy, ye muu-der is f***ing lay-lek) , meaning hey, your mother is f***ing ugly.
that usually shut them up.
