to be honest with you, from the fishing mags that I read, I think coastal south cal is mostly fished out ... unless you go on a charter boat or something, all you'll get would be palm sized surf perch ....Originally posted by Arapahoe:Fatum

why not try fresh water fishing instead ? ... large mouth bass is very popular I believe, Skid would be able to help you out there ... along with rainbow trout at some larger bodies of water.

skin the fish, lay it on one side, and continuously scrape at the flesh with a metal spoon ..... roll up the scrapped up flesh into a ball, dump into a bowl of iced salt water and voila ! ... freshly made fish balls .....
you can of course, try that with other fish, but apparently, the consistency of the flesh must be just right, pelagic fishes works better than those with more fibrous flesh, like cod for example ....
go try that out ... I'm going to make some lake whitefish fishballs this weekend ....

I think I only told skiddy about this, but the current all tackle world record rainbow trout was caught earlier this year at the very same lake where the rainbow trout shown above were caught ....Originally posted by euc:I just read this news..

and yes, you can use freshwater fish, why not ? ... my dad made some out of snakehead fish for my mommy the last time ...

Correction to that. Did not really use lamb pieces. I forgot I just used lamb chops in my crab net to catch crabs..so ocasionally try my luck with a few lamb pieces.

Fresh water stuff.
They have grasscarp here. Couldn't find grasscarp in SG no more. I only had it when I was a kid along street side SG china town.
Another rare item from the lake and was surprise to find it and ate it in chinese resturant in Socal that they serve this fresh water softshell turtle in a claypot. (caught out from Florida)
