Really? I thought it is sea bass. Is sea perch good to eat?Originally posted by Fatum:!
I see three sweetlips, one parrot fish, one grouper, one coral trout, one fingermark snapper, one fusilier and ... now that's very very rare ... a sea perch (not the sea bass !)
damm ! I miss fishing at the lighthouse ...
at the right seasons you can get pelagics like spanish mackeral there ...
the fussiler is the oval shaped red backed, yellowtail'ed fish ....Originally posted by elindra:Really? I thought it is sea bass. Is sea perch good to eat?
Which is the coral trout n fusillier
The coral trout look like a grouper lehOriginally posted by Fatum:the fussiler is the oval shaped red backed, yellowtail'ed fish ....
the coral trout is the grouper like fish with the sharp instead of rounded tail ...
the 4 kilo monster is a coral trout too actually ....
the sea perch is a relative of the common sea bass, but frequents open waters instead of estuarine waters, I've only ever seen one other caught before, and I've never eaten one ...
the seabass, (barramundi in oz speak, or gim bak lor, ikan siakap to us, lates calcarifer to boffins) is an esturine species, it thrives in brackish waters, I've caught them up to 15 pounds in swamps before, but they can live in totally fresh water too ....Originally posted by elindra:The coral trout look like a grouper leh
Which is nicer to eat?
So the sea perch is like a salmon?
Can live in the sea and river?
yeps, hongkie style works fine ... process sweet lips like a snapper ...Originally posted by elindra:How to cook a fusilier?
Also how to cook the sweet lips
I have never eaten these before
Also for the stripped coral trout steaming it HK style works?
But if it is as fat as a saba fishOriginally posted by Fatum:yeps, hongkie style works fine ... process sweet lips like a snapper ...
I'd just fry the fusilier ... as a pelagic fish their flesh's rather like the mackeral's a bit dry ....

Fatum can you ID this fish?
MPB's catch from Pasir Ris
He says it's a Chao Xi?
It's as large as a dinner plate
Apparently his friends caught nothing
Oh wellOriginally posted by Fatum:hmmm ... Interesting ... I remember catching this off changi before ... but the name eludes me, my marine fishes reference books are stacked away in Singapore ...
SURE!
The Malays call it Tudung Periuk (Lid of a pot)
The Chinese call it ChaoXi
The General Ang Mo term is Sickle Fish
Then Ang Mo call it Butter Bream
Sickle fish (or butter bream) are a common bait fishing target in our tidal estuaries and the salt water section of river mouths.
This pretty little fish grows to the size of a large dinner plate, and is just as round with distinguishing black spots over bright silver bodies.
They use the current to their advantage, turning side on and offer a much more spirited fight than their size would suggest.
Best caught on light spinning tackle, a standard running rig, 1 to 1/0 hook baited with peeled or live prawn.
They are good eating, as their common name would suggest. A great family fish
