Went fishing again at another part of the lake on sunday ... original target was whitefish on a fly-rod .... but as the weather forecast predicted gusting winds, it was abandoned in favour of spinning lures and bait on light spinning tackle ....
here are the pics :
the rainbows are a few and far between this year so far ... but they get pretty big when they come by ... this one's caught by my friend, a 4.5 pounder, taken on a free-lined minnow casted out just 10 feet from the shoreline ! .... the whitefish above's mine ... taken on a free-lined dead minnow on ultra-light spinning tackle ... and we caught 4 others ...
the creek where we were fishing ... when this pic was snapped at 8pm there were whitefishes rising all over the lake, sipping insects .... I also caught and release another small pike on a chartreuse powerhead jig at the head of the creek
that's my friend holding up his prize ...
last cast of the day ...
freshwater crayfish ... they infest the lake, you can see dozens of them in the icy water right from the shoreline ... the trout of this lake feed on these tasty crustaceans and their meat turns a delicious dark red instead of the normal orange or pink ... this bugger latched onto my minnow and now lives in an aquarium ...
the rocky shoreline where the rainbow was caught ... it was probably patrolling the shoreline picking up crayfish ...
hopefully by next week the water will warm up enough for the lunker walleyes to move in ....
