i always smuggle chewing gum across the causeway.

i rem my first stepmom's sister came here...
and she brought dog meat....
from peeleepines.....
she wrapped it up in layers and layers of tape and paper and plastic.
example:
meat was the size of two fists.
after wrapping....
2/3 the size of a normal pillow. -

To smuggle something into Canada is pretty easy from my exp. I just place the Canadian flag tags on my suitcases or hand carry and i walk in without any problems.
HEll, i even had a customs officer welcoming me back into Canada. Had 3 cartons of Marlboros for me mates. -

Bring in amount for personal consumption alright.
Only problem, where is the line between amount considered import and amount for personal consumption.
I think if you bring in some loose stash in a small plastic bag, should be ok.
Neat boxes of chewing gum is no no.
But I have brought in some boxes, of 10 packets of chewing gum each, in my luggage, by walking through customs as nothing to declare. This is in addition to the "personal consumption" stash I carry in my backpack.
Done this many times, so chewing gum should not be counted. -
