I feel bad about laughing .... but I can't help it ...
remember some time back I mentioned in passing to the usual suspects that a friend of mine got into an accident with her pontiac grand am coupe ? ....
she just sent me a series of pictures for her insurance claim ....
tis what happened:
she travels regularly between alberta and saskatchewan, cos she's a master student in biotech, has to travel to assorted field research stations ... so ... she bought herself a nice little dark red grand am coupe ... I even helped her change pads and oil myself ...
she was travelling about 2 weeks ago from SK to AB ... on the highway the hood latch broke off and flew back up ! .... the hood panel separated itself from the car and slammed into the windshield, spider-webbed it ... and made a big dent on the roof ....
the car has been written off by the insurers .... -
Wow! If something like that happened to me, I'd be pretty shook up.
I'm curious to know how/why it happened, though. The hoods of most cars are double latched, i.e., even after pulling the release lever or pressing a button inside the cabin to "pop the hood," one still needs to manually disengage a second latch usually located under the front lip of the hood, before the hood can be raised.
Even if the hood had been popped from inside the cabin, the second latch should still have prevented the hood from flying open.
But with GM engineering and quality control being what it is, anything's possible.

and you changed the oil for her? did u break the latch while at it?

no .... though I have to admit ... her hood latch was pretty problematic from the start ... just before that she drove for 5 hours into town with a loose hood cos she didn't know how to close it properly after checking the oil at a rest stop ... -

but the grand am series was started at a time when GM and the other two were clawing back slowing from the pits, despite that the grand am is still a very popular car ....
