Finally arrived in Huntsville, Alabama at around 2 a.m. Saturday morning. The Friday evening flight out of Minneapolis was delayed for over 2 hours because--get this--they couldn't locate the flight crew. Northworst eventually had to fly in an aircrew from Boseman, Montana, to take the flight. How's that for a completely screwed-up airline?
Anyway, the flight to Nashville, Tennessee was uneventful, and the two-hour drive to Huntsville was boring.
These somewhat boring images were taken yesterday (Saturday):
Outside my friend's house in Madison, which is a 'burb of Huntsville.
On University Ave., which is one of the main thoroughfares leading into Huntsville. No shortage of shopping malls here!
Just outside the US Space Flight Center. There's a museum and IMAX theater there, and we'll be visiting the place later today.

Yes, the weather here is a huge improvement over that of Minnesota. In fact, right now, anything above freezing is desirable.... -

Indeed! It got up to 61°F yesterday, a far cry from the frigid weather back in the Twin Cities. It was actually nice to be able to walk around outside wearing a t-shirt and jeans.Originally posted by Fatum:no snow ! ...
Alabama might be part of the same country, but you might be forgiven for thinking you're in a foreign land. One has to get used to the southern drawl, and the pace of life here is noticeably slower and more relaxed. People don't seem to be in much of a rush to go places or do things. I have to force myself to slow down on the roads, as most people drive at or under the speed limit. -

Thankfully, there's no snow, and the temps are expected to get back up into the 40s and 50s this weekend. That's not exactly making me anxious to return to Minnesota.... -

I fly back to the Twin Cities on Sunday morning. The flight leaves Nashville at 7 a.m., and it's a two-hour drive from Huntsville to Nashville, so I'll have to leave here at around 4 a.m. Sunday morning. Ugh. -
Back in Minnesota... ugh!
The flight left Nashville 50 minutes late, but this time, the delay was weather-related, rather than being caused by a tardy flight crew.

A B&B just outside of DeSoto State Park.
The next set of pictures was taken inside the vast system of caverns and caves at Ruby Falls, on the outskirts of Chattanooga, Tennessee. An elevator shaft takes visitors over a thousand feet underground, and the guided walking tour is a little over a mile distance.
And the centerpiece of Ruby Falls: a 145-foot waterfall located 1120 feet undergound. Pardon the poor image quality--lighting conditions weren't ideal for photography, and using the flash just illuminated the water droplets in front of the lens.

Actually, there are signs prominently posted around the waterfall and pool warning people against jumping into the water from the rim. Apparently, people have been killed in the past doing just that.
Looking at the images again, I just noticed there's no scale reference to indicate the height of the waterfall. It's actually 120 feet high. You sure you want to slide down a waterfall of that height?
