But hor, I've been to WDC three times leh and ALL times, it was boring for me.
The tour bus took us to monuments after monuments and the museums. And my last trip to SI (about 3 years ago hor), I just sat in the lobby waiting for times up to board the bus.
Anyways, have fun touring but don't forget to check out your universities hor.

If anyone gets a chance to go to DC, fly in and out of Reagan National Airport (DCA). The airport is on the Virginia side of the Potomac, next to the Penatgon. If landing south, you'll fly a procedure known as the River Visual. You'll fly south along the Potomac and can see the sights off to the left.Great view, especially at night. It can be nerve wracking for us flying it, because we have to avoid 2 Prohibited Areas - White House and US Capitol.
Was in DC a week and a half ago. Still freaking hot then. Walked around for 6 hours. Remember Smithsonian museums are all free. If you have time, go to the new Udvar-Hazy museum, part of the Air and Space Museum, near IAD. One of the retired Concordes is housed there. -

Yup, I flew into DCA in the late-90s and experienced the River Visual approach along the Potomac. It was a most... interesting... approach, as it seemed like they were trying to stay over the water on the whole approach. Lots of sharp banking accompanied with frequent power setting changes, almost all the way till touchdown.
This was before 9/11, so they didn't have the 30-minute "stay in your seat or else" rule in place for passengers. -
The River Visual is charted and it does expect us to stay over the river. Apparently, the bridges have lights which show green when you are over the river and turn red if you stray too close to DC. Then there is a sharp turn to line up with the runway centerline. With 3 intersecting runways at DCA it can be tricky. Departures off Rwy 1 have you making a sharp left turn which takes you right over the Pentagon. Good stuff. -

sights ah? well, i don't really like wdc leh. okay, first trip, got get off bus to look around lah. second trip, stay on bus. third trip, on reflection, actually was 2 years ago leh. i took mother in law there so more for her than me. i just sat around waiting for tour guide to say "okay, let's go". hee hee
but u wanna explore right? with a car hor, u can drive to virginia lah, pennsylvania lah, new jersey lah and other surrounding areas mah.

streamie, i think i would find it fun since i love monuments and history. and yeah i am already thinking of driving on their highway!! 120kmph!! NOW TAT IS REAL SPEED one shld travel on a highway!! hahah -

Unless things have changed, you should be able to get your IDL at the AAS in a day. Don't know how much they charge for that service nowadays, though.
And, as LS has mentioned, please be careful when you drive in the DC metro area. Drivers on the east coast can be a challenging lot. -

i don't know about MG's area but in toronto, when u stop at the red light, those turning right could still make a turn (even with the red light) taking safety into consideration.
also, there are the street cars and school buses. school buses hv stop sign, when the sign is up, if u r behind them, u gotta stop. even if u r on the opposite direction unless there is a divider.
street cars? also many rules but i don't know 'cos i don't drive downtown. -

Remember that the car rental companies are in business to make a buck, and they'll be more than willing to rent you a vehicle on the strength of your SG license. However, if you get pulled over for a traffic infraction, you're answerable to the state, not the rental company.
Better play it safe and get an IDL. -
campy, its best to equip urself wif an IDL if u plan to drive overseas. mono here speaking from experience.
