ohh.. tell me about those long haul flights ! thats why, the next time i fly back, im making sure ill lend my butt on SQ ! no more crappy north american airlines for me !Originally posted by Meia Gisborn:Perhaps not.
I began living permanently in the US in '91, right after college, but made trips back to Singapore every year thereafter, right up to around 2000.
The flights to and from Singapore were long, arduous and uncomfortable. My body never really coped well with the time zone changes, and for the first few days after my arrival, I'd be wide awake at night and barely able to function during the day due to fatigue, with the heat and humidity further sapping what little energy I had. I noticed that, as I grew older, it would take me longer to recover from jet lag on both the outbound and return legs. These annual trips to Singapore were more tests of endurance than restful and relaxing vacations, and I stopped going every year after 2000.
My most recent trip there was in October/November 2003, and I stayed two months to make it worth the effort. It took me a full three weeks to synchronize my circadian rhythm with the local time zone. And as an added bonus, I caught some kind of bug that manifested itself as a throat irritation which didn't go away for almost half a year after that trip.
I'll probably head back there again sometime in '07 or '08. But I'm not looking forward to it.
SQ's flights are definitely more comfortable, but you pay a premium for it. In addition, I still need to take a domestic flight to connect with SQ on the coast.Originally posted by ben1406:ohh.. tell me about those long haul flights ! thats why, the next time i fly back, im making sure ill lend my butt on SQ ! no more crappy north american airlines for me !

Wow MG, a pilgrimage every year for 9 years?! Pei fu you man for having the strength to endure that arduous journey, and the expense! *hatching idea for a new thread * Good luck on your next journey to Sg. PS. That throat infection, was it strep?Originally posted by Meia Gisborn:Perhaps not.

I do not recall what it was. I did visit a physician about it after a few months, when I got tired of the hacking, and he prescribed some antibiotics. That seemed to do the trick.Originally posted by jetta:Wow MG, a pilgrimage every year for 9 years?! come to think of it, free helicopter rides too!Originally posted by Meia Gisborn:What's not to like? Free ocean cruise, funded by the taxpayers!
I think it was strep. Only goes away with antibiotics. Be careful should it hit you again. The doc has to take a throat culture to confirm and it's annoying. Can affect the ears if left untreated.Originally posted by Meia Gisborn:I do not recall what it was. The one thing that did amaze me when I was making those frequent trips to Singapore, was just how quickly the cityscape would change in just a year. I'd always be noticing buildings and roads that weren't there the previous year.
The one constant, though, was the overcrowding, which seemed to get worse with every visit. Riding the trains and buses during peak hours was an exercise in physical and mental endurance. One wonders how Singapore's quality of life can be improved or even maintained with the burgeoning population there.
nope!!.. back in sg!!!!! hahahaha.. been catching up with old pals and stuff... =D, hows life up north!Originally posted by Fatum:you're back in Atlanta now ? ...
