  Do you happen to know if retail businesses in Vancouver accept US currency? I'm just wondering if I need to exchange some US dollars with Canadian currency before heading there.

  they should.. here in mississauga, some retail shops do accept us currency.

  I agree with ben1406, MG. I believe they do. They major retailers have that exchange rate board at the cashier. Not sure about makan places though.
  
  However, I would suggest you convert some C$ for backup and for makan or petty expenses.

  Thanks for all the information and advice. Unfortunately, we'll only be in Vancouver for 2 days and 1 night, so we'll really only have time to hang around Vancouver proper and the Richmond district where the "new" Chinatown is located.
  
  Given Vancouver's proximity to Seattle, I would not be surprised at all that US currency is readily accepted there. As Fatum has mentioned, it's just a matter of how much they are going to "profit" from the exchange rate. Just to be on the safe side, I'll be bringing a small amount of Canadian currency along (I was able to net a reasonably favourable exchange rate at the local branch of Well Fargo, with whom I do business).
  
  I'll be bringing my laptop and the hotels in Seattle and Vancouver have free wi-fi, so I'll be able to keep in touch with you guys during the trip!

  Wah seh.......MG............your calculator skills very good leh. Yah, remember to shop for all the makan stuff. You will be able to buy Prima Taste packs at T&T Supermarket. Eat durians too!! Never mind lah, frozen.

  The most memorable places in Vancouver were the supermarkets. Just like Canada itself: spacious and uncrowded.

  hey, i been to vancouver last week. i all i can tell u its really a paradise compared to singapore. Especially the shopping malls, they are huge and really uncrowded, plenty of time and no rush for u to walk every level quickly unlike in singapore. I forgot wats the shopping mall with a musical fountain in it, that was really spectacular.

  yup, i stayed @ a relative's house in coquitlam but most hong kong ppl stays at richmond i guess.
