Winter driving tips ...

Witnessed multiple accidents while out driving yesterday ... so I thought it's a good idea to start a thread on this so people unused to driving in snowy conditions can get a reference ...
things to keep in mind:
1. go easy on the accelerator, with heavy snow on the road, it's difficult to gain traction, slamming on the accelerator will just spin your wheels and dig your car in, people always do that at intersections
2. break early, cos the road's are slippery, you'd have to break earlier than you would normally do, seeing a fulll sized volvo spinning 360 degrees right in front of you is a scary sight ...
3. try to shift to neutral before you break too ...
4. get a set of traction mats if you can ... can't rely on people from behind you coming out to help push your car out of the way everytime ! ... had to do that too many times already ! ...
5. take note of lanes and shoulders ... may be difficult when on the highway and the snow is blowing across the road like a moving white carpet ...
6. go SLOW ! ... no brainer ... but scary how feel people actually do this .... -

In addition to what Fatum has said, I would suggest the following:
- Make sure you have sufficient tread depth left on your tires. The general rule of thumb is that when the treads are down to 1/8" or less, it's time to get new tires. If you budget allows, switch over to snow tires in winter. Their deeper and more aggressive tread pattern provides better traction on snow-covered roads than all-season tires. However, if you leave your all-seasons mounted the whole year, at least make sure they have enough tread to provide reasonable traction on snow-covered roads.
- Get used to how your vehicle performs and reacts in the snow. Drive to a large, vacant, snow-covered parking lot and practise your skid recovery techniques. If your vehicle is equipped with ABS, learn what it feels like when it activates during braking, so you don't become "surprised" and lift you foot off the brake when it starts pulsating. If your vehicle is not equipped with ABS, learn how to recognize wheel lock-up so you can ease up on the brakes to the point where they start spinning again. The point just before lock-up is where maximum braking effectiveness is achieved.
- If you're driving a vehicle with a manual transmission, using 2nd gear to pull away from a complete stop (instead of 1st gear) helps to reduce wheelspin on a snow-covered road. -

Thanks for the tips.
I think I heard somebody suggesting to the Provincial government to impose winter tyres law!!! Oh, I hope not. My all season tyres seem to work fine ley. Don't want to spend extra $$$$ ley.
