anyway.... it's the journey that counts.... not the destination....
wow.... i m also thinking of going to eastern europe! (not now though... it is freezing there now!!) which country is the best?? i m considering going to slovakia, bosnia and romania... hv u been to sarajevo?.... any advice?Originally posted by summersnow^-^:Hi sacredspirits,
Looks like we share some similarity. I enjoy backpacking and travelling. Usually with friend, but did once alone to Eastern Europe. Is a great experience.
Been to Peru (S. America), is a nice place!
I am thinking to do a backpack soon. Just fall out of love lately, need to get away.

no... till now, i hv not got anything stolen yet *CHOY*... but i hv been real careful.... always have money bag around my waist to keep money and passport.... only time that i lost my watch is when i accidentally left it at a train station in italy.... heart pain man.... cos the watch costs me about S$150!!! first watch i bought for myself!!!
I think you can scratch out the second one eh ? ... even if you don't have to deal with religious militants there's still the recent earthquake yah ! ...Originally posted by summersnow^-^:I will get excited once mentioned abt backpacking!!
Hv many interesting encountered too. But so far didnt hv too much hiccup.
Friends will doubt how am I to cope with backpacking alone esp for a female. Somehow it just get by. I think preparation must be done well b4 any trip. It can avoid/minismise risk.
sacredspirits, I think u r v kind, even willing to help out in ethiopia which is not many pple will willing to. *clap*
I only been to Poland, Czech Rep, Hungary in Eastern Europe.
Hmm, realise those places you wanted to go are quite exotic ya.
I also thinking to plan a trip ard Feb. Havent confirmed where to go. Mongolia sounds interesting.
Few places I am considering are:
1) Egypt, Turkey
2) India, Kashmir
3) Switzerland, Holland, Liechtenstein
(Liechtenstein -> Any one heard of this small little country in Europe? I heard is v beautiful!! It is between Switzerland and Austria)
sorie, bo leh.. im more of a participant lor.. lazy to read up on the venue.. but im beri on wan.. willin to try sorts of stuff.. wah, so impress wif u asipiration..Originally posted by sacredspirits:sure!
mongolia is one of my 'goals' as well.... u got any info about there?
ethiopia.... ha... chose it cos a fren is asking if i would like to help out there in a school..... i dunno what i can do to help... but just see what i can do... i know of a backpacker who was backpacking in ethiopia... saw the street kids there and actually started a trust there for helping street kids.... hopefully, i can meet her there and b inspired!
hmm... dunno whether to agree on this or not... i hv backpacked with fren whom i love (not bf/gf... but great frens!) but then hor.... hmm... good to b frens but not that good when live together leh... esp. when both hv different plans on where to go, what to do... etc ....Originally posted by Wanda:Hi, finally found this forum.
I just read something that Ernest Hemmingway wrote which is good fodder for thought: Never travel with someone whom you don't love.
(Love does not mean the bf/gf kind only, okie?)

yo! Egypt!! i actually planning to go there recently... but thought since i hv neber been to middle eastern (n muslim) country alone b4, i dunno what to expect.... n one of my colleague's 'advice' has not been very helpful as well... but ha... definitely would like to go sometime next year as well!! (ever wonder why all those guide books r more towards ag moh?? even the 'bible' for backpackers... the LP... so, sometimes i oso dunno whether the warnings, precautions ect they say will actually b different for orientals or not...)
I like travelling alone actually ... but then i'm a guy ... so I guess i can only be robbed or conned .... (and i have been .... but that's fodder for another thread ... ) ....Originally posted by sacredspirits:hmm... dunno whether to agree on this or not... i hv backpacked with fren whom i love (not bf/gf... but great frens!) but then hor.... hmm... good to b frens but not that good when live together leh... esp. when both hv different plans on where to go, what to do... etc ....
i cant wait to start backpacking too after army. lets do it!!Originally posted by sacredspirits:i m crazy about travelling/backpacking.... just wondering if we could share info, stories about travelling/backpacking??
me only been to:
- SEA : m'sia, thailand, laos, vietnam

- europe : france, spain, switzerland, germany, austria, UK, czech, italy ... going to denmark this weekend
dreaming to go tibet, mongolia, south america....
Same here. Usually I dont travel with good friends (coincidence). I hv a few travel buddies, whom can "fit well" when go travelling. Easy to compromise, same frequency, same interest...we agreed to OTOT (own time own target) when she prefer shopping, where I prefer visiting cathedral. So is a good combination ya. Otherwise, sure a lot of conflict.Originally posted by sacredspirits:hmm... dunno whether to agree on this or not... i hv backpacked with fren whom i love (not bf/gf... but great frens!) but then hor.... hmm... good to b frens but not that good when live together leh... esp. when both hv different plans on where to go, what to do... etc ....

I been to Dubai/UAE and Jordan in middle east, I hope Egypt shld not hv too much of a culture shock. I also considering to join contiki tour to Egypt if I can't cope backpack there alone.
Hv u heard of a local writer - Wu Wei Cai? He backpacked to a lot of countries!! I read a lot of his articles, and sort of been influences by him.
I also those crazy type, ever quit without a job, and went backpack for a month. Usually only in between 2 jobs then can afford to go such a long period.
Yes, LP is a bible for backpackers. It is written by angmo, so I guess we can only use as a guideline.
Hey, can we work out some places next Feb? I think Maurince also quite keen ya.
sure, i've gone on holidays with friends, but not backpacking trips, i'll be sure to post some of the stuff here.Originally posted by Fatum:We Wei Cai ? ...
His "Bei Bao Zhou Tian Ya" series of books inspired me to go backpacking in the first place ! ...
and if you guys do hook up and go somewhere ... be sure to post some pics or a sort of a travelogue here yah ....
I guess Hemmingway was trying to say that it's easier to accept your travel companions' weird habits and silliness if they happen to be the ppl you love.Originally posted by sacredspirits:hmm... dunno whether to agree on this or not... i hv backpacked with fren whom i love (not bf/gf... but great frens!) but then hor.... hmm... good to b frens but not that good when live together leh... esp. when both hv different plans on where to go, what to do... etc ....
I definitely agree with this rule of not more than 4. More than 4 and everything becomes harder to arrange and/or more expensive to arrange, e.g. harder to find bigger guesthouse, need to pay more for a bigger rental car to acomodate ppl + luggage, etc. and most difficult of all, make decisions that everyone will be happy with - which I've found (to my regret) that it is near impossible to happen for a grp of 6. That was the lousiest F & E holiday I've ever had - in Perth.Originally posted by Fatum:but i think if you're going to some "ulu" places or you have to have some company, a good rule to follow would be to travel in even numbers ... 2 or 4 ... and never more than 4 ....
No doubt it's a really lovely place, but i believe they don't have flush toilets at the Lijiang gu cheng (old town)...and most of the toilets there are usually located away from the main house in a separate, standalone hut.Originally posted by sacredspirits:5) in Lijiang, yunan, china, there is this orphanage in the old town... they hv guest rooms as well.... the rates are similar to the other guest houses in the old town... but money will b put to good use for the orphans..... (i hope)
Wanda's been there as well ? ...Originally posted by Wanda:No doubt it's a really lovely place, but i believe they don't have flush toilets at the Lijiang gu cheng (old town)...and most of the toilets there are usually located away from the main house in a separate, standalone hut.
