How old are her kids? From what I read on the MOE link, my daughter can get a total exemption since she'll be in Sec 1 next year. My son unfortunately will have to learn, the poor boy. I can't afford private school in Sg so I'm thinking, retirement in Sg isn't going to work. And boy are you ever right. The longer we are overseas, the poorer we get. That stinks.Originally posted by littlestream:so how ah?
yesterday, i had a gathering. so i asked this couple whom i told you worked in us for over 10 years but didn't get green card hor? they returned to s'pore, right? she placed her two girls in the local school leh.
i asked her about mandarin exemption. she said boh exemption but teacher was lenient and understanding towards their handicap wor.
are you returning to s'pore though?
Well, at least her kids grew up in Sg, can speak dialect, Singlish, etc. Mine are clueless. It's hard to create a niche here even. IT here isn't the same as IT in Sg. Agree? I keep hearing so many people in Sg are dying to leave but IMHO, life is good there.Originally posted by littlestream:Erm, i think her situation can't shed any light 'cos they now have emigrated here over 3 years liao. so i am guessing, her kids were 6 and 9. initially, they thought, they will settle in s'pore but that didn't work out.
eventually, they left the country also. hence, landed in toronto. i think the kids also happier here. job wise, i can't say much about the parents. they are still finding their niche. both IT some more.
sometimes, sounds or seems easy but then perhaps not. after what i've seen, i can only gather........our life lah.
some came and make it good and some still struggling.
Wow. Hope the kids are adjusting well. Sounds like my life huh?Originally posted by littlestream:no, no, no.......her kids are monolingual also. i believe they only stayed in s'pore for about a year and then cha bot again.
so what's the plan? are you planning to relocate to s'pore or seattle?
We'll make the best of it. Bo pian, really. Thing is, his family's all there. Both the in-laws and the outlaws. There is a power struggle within the inlaws and we refuse to get involved. That's why I'm happy my friends live on the other side of the water where it's cheaper. Prices there still affordable and that's the town we got married at. It's near the base and near the first place we ever rented too. *sigh* So anyway. I'm glad our relatives live on the other side of the water. At least 90 mins away from the closest one.Originally posted by littlestream:i think not that bad bah. move back to seattle.
i guess depending what suits the family, right? the lifestyle, the financial position.
no one knows the future. even though we may be here but we still may never know where we will be say, 10 years from now.
just remember, what is right today may not be right tomorrow. we can't chase it. we just have to go with what's being laid out in the present. and then adjust as we go along.
I know him. He started pm'ing me a while back so I know some of his history in SD county. Thanks ah. But he's not Sgporean leh.Originally posted by littlestream:jetta ah...........skid say hi to you in sb leh. he said he live in sd county for 15 years. before you ask him lah. both in us easier to share bah.
orh, izzit?Originally posted by jetta:I know him. He started pm'ing me a while back so I know some of his history in SD county. Thanks ah. But he's not Sgporean leh.
You're right. That's why I've been having near sleepless nights thinking about this. When we had the kids, we thought, let's retire in Sg. Now it's not so clear cut. Though my kids have spent alot of time in Sg, they don't know what the school system is like. I know they'll go through alot of teasing and finger pointing directed at them which is something no Mother can tolerate well. We're thinking, haiz, move back to Seattle, see how things go. We have good friends there, all Navy or retired military. They are helping us find a house there as well as a job for the hubby post-retirement. The plan is to move up this summer before school there starts. We're just waiting to hear from the navy about logistics and funding.Originally posted by Fatum:one of my aunties stayed in texas for more than 10 years, hub was working for one of those big oil concerns, when they relocated back to Singapore, it was pretty traumatic for both the kids and the adults ... even though they were doing pretty well for themselves already, with a condo and all .... the culture shock was greater for the older kid ... school culture's very different in Singapore ... takes a bit to get used to the authoritarian style here .... it's not just the languages, they had mandarin tuition over there too ... but kids made fun of their accent, etc ....
if you're thinking of relocating for good jetta, best make a decision fast, before the kids get too big .... I think it's more difficult for them to adjust as they get older ...
My mum lives in my flat. We started renting out one room when my CPF went down to nothing. I'm a little frus at the situation really. My parents weren't savvy with their money. They rented for the longest time until they bought a flat which they later had to sell. Then they went back to renting. Years later, when I bought mine before leaving Sg, I wanted to rent it out. But how could I do that knowing that my parents are renting? So for the past 10 years, I've been paying the mortgage one way or another. I told them I was going to sell it some day. Now that some day has come and I can't. I've been thinking of buying a smaller flat but there are no 3 rooms with a cheap price. I've emailed HDB and they say they have no studio apts to sell for the next 2 years.Originally posted by littlestream:Can bo chap except on occasions mah. Yah, I saw MG's pics and you were mentioning the place you got married. Sounds like a neat little town. And it's near the base. So, that's cool!
Why can't sell sg flat? That friend I told you about also same case leh. They bought at a high. And if they were to sell it now, the price would be less than their mortgage. So, got to fork out more hard cash. As you know, no such spare cash around here.
It's a pity they can't rent it out either. Nobody, I say, nobody in their families willing to manage the rental for them.
Isn't life cheaper in TX? I have a friend who moved from No Cal to TX and she loves it there. Big house, etc. Not Sgporean though. Will he take the green card anyway? That would be easier for him to then move to Canada as a US green card holder?Originally posted by littlestream:wah, fatum..........more than 10 years also no green card ah?
well, i've this friend who moved down last year. wife and hubby moved to toronto about 4 years ago. hubby's in the energy/oil& gas sector also. career didn't exactly took off although he was quite a biggie in s'pore.
finally, a job in US came a calling. they are now in texas too. i think his employers getting him a green card. but seriously, he said he preferred canada leh.
they got the green cards, but decided to move back anyways ... for the kids I believe ... hub was doing great, career was taking off, taking in more than US$10000 a month ... kids started out in montisorri schools and were identified as gifted ... but I guess they moved back to be close to their families perhaps, and to expose their kids kids to asian culture i suppose, ... I dunno ... people move around the globe for various personal and esoteric reasons eh ....Originally posted by littlestream:wah, fatum..........more than 10 years also no green card ah?
