A typical conversation in which I reveal my country of birth to a local:
Bloke: Where are you from?
Me: Originally, Singapore.
Bloke: Oh. Didn't that country go back to China in 1997?
Me: .......
[b]OR
Bloke: Where are you from?
Me: Singapore.
Bloke: Oh. Do they still ban chewing gum there?
Me: .......
OR
Bloke: You don't sound like you're from around here.
Me: I'm actually from Singapore.
Bloke: COOL! That's where they caned that young American punk for vandalism, right? Damn, I wish they'd do that here! You won't believe what kids in this country get away with nowadays.
Me: .......

this reminds me of an incident related to me by another singaporean over here, a Singapore-indian chap, apparently, someone was going around telling people around the engineering faculty that he's from singapore .... so my friend went to check him out ... perhaps touch base, connect with him, etc ... turned out that guy was from India ! ... with a distinctive Un-Singaporean accent ! (use your imagination) .... he quailed when my friend the real singaporean went up to him and he confessed ......Originally posted by CryoLind:Most of them dunno where Singapore is...
Some ang moh asked me if i'm Chinese (cos all Asians look the same to them) and i said yes, and they presumed that i'm from China. They just dun understand that Chinese are not only from China.
Ultimate one, an Indian born in Europe asked this
IBE: Where are you from?
Me: Singapore
IBE: So....are you Singaporean Indian?
Me: ermm...ermm...
I look 100% chinese... i dunno y....
Given China's current population of approximately 1.1 billion people and the fact that most Chinese in the world are indeed from China, the ang moh would have a statistically significant chance of being correct in guessing you're from China.Originally posted by CryoLind:Most of them dunno where Singapore is...

Turning the tables around, would you be able to ascertain the country of origin of a randomly-chosen ang moh on the streets of Singapore?
