Wintering Tips ....

Okie ... I'm going to do the Mod thingy .... here's a thread for winter survival tips .... be it clothes, food, driving, etc ... all inputs and questions welcome ! .... I hope this can be a resource for folks travelling to colder climes, be it for work, studies or holidays .... so those "old birds" well versed in the art of "winter survival" .... fire away ! ....

Clothing
-Long John (underwear that keeps you warm)
-Windbreaker/jacket/jumper (preferably more than 1, thick and thin)
-Long sleeve T-shirts
Household
-Heater (most homes come with a heater installed. Otherwise, buy a portable one, usually less than S$50).
-Quilt (ensure that it's thick to keep you warm through the winter nights)
Food
-You'll find yourself eating more than you usually do in Singapore.
-Chicken soup, pumpkin soup, winter melon soup, you get the idea...
-Coffee, tea or hot chocolate. -
I'll leave the general clothing tips to others .... but here's what i found very very useful ....
a pair of SAF issue gortex Boots !!! ......
It's quite good for icy, slippery sidewalks .... good traction, keeps your feet warm ... and is sort of waterproof as well (very important) ......
plus it's free (for most people ) ....

buy winter jackets from whereever u r, cos cheaper n suited for the weather there...
wear about 3layer(tshirt, longsleeve tshirt, your trustee jacket)(more if u r in more colder countries)
prepare a pair of boots
eat chocolate, n drink soup that was listed above...
stock up food at your place so no need to go out tat often... -
Winter jackets from China = the bees knees.
Seriously, my mum was able to get me a couple of down jackets that are about as warm as you can get w/ breaking the bank. It costs her peanuts. Compare that with the Ralph Lauren jacket my sis got me: S$300!
I simply love down. Even my quilt is filled with down and it is very warm compared to the synthetic crap they sell in supermarkets. -
ooh the magic of a woolen scarf
It can make a biiig difference especially on cold, wet & windy days! I love my scarf... keeps my neck warm hence the rest of me feels warmer too, plus it's a good accessory!
For heaters... I heard that those oil fin heaters are very much better than the normal fan heaters, but haven't had the privilege of trying out an oil fin heater yet

i'm using a pair of timberland boots ! good stuff and pretty cheap at the factory outlets here. -

btw, it's was the last day of summer yesterday here in canada and we welcome fall ! -
Use a card to remove snow from car windshields.. Dont throw hot water.

get a electric blanket. it keeps you warm throughout the night and doesn't use much electricity.
