my friends in the UK developed this phobia of boiled pasta and spaghetti sauce ...
its beyond standard of living. I want a place where no single form of discrimination is a national policy. In that regard, Singapore fails miserably.Originally posted by Fatum:hmmm .... oh well ... i still feel pretty lucky to be from Singapore than some third world shit hole though .... maybe it's just my parents' hardwork, but I'm quite proud that a middle class Singaporean family (like mine) can afford to send their kids for studies overseas ...
where we ultimately choose to live out our lives would be one's personal choices eh ? ...
well heng, ... I suppose discrimination exist, in every society on earth eh ? ... what is more important I suppose, it what we do and where we stand as individuals, no ? ...Originally posted by HENG@:its beyond standard of living. I don't think u understandOriginally posted by Fatum:well heng, ... I suppose discrimination exist, in every society on earth eh ? ... what is more important I suppose, it what we do and where we stand as individuals, no ? ...
of course, people who truly feel stifled in Singapore should get out, but if I decide to make a new life for myself somewhere else, I'd would still like to think I left a lot of fond memories in the land I left behind ..... but it's good that you've found yourself a place you're comfortable in ...
yes I do heng, officially sanctioned discrimination still exist in other countries too ... for example, male homosexuals are not allowed to serve in the armed services of many countries, such as the US, eh ...Originally posted by HENG@:I don't think u understand
discrimination exists everywhere, but not all places have a certain form of discrimintion as NATIONAL policy. I can deal with discrimination, if its not OFFICIALLY SUPPORTED.
thats funny, there are quite a lot of male homosexuals in the US army. how did u come up with that?Originally posted by Fatum:yes I do heng, officially sanctioned discrimination still exist in other countries too ... for example, male homosexuals are not allowed to serve in the armed services of many countries, such as the US, eh ...
oh well ... we're nit-picking here ... but personally though, I find societal and individual discrimination to be more insidious, for these are "stealth" eh ? ... perhaps it may not be what you'd like to hear, but often, "official discrimination " are but a reflection of the wider society, no ? ... (that was a non-normative statement btw ), the tougher fight is not to change official policy, but to change a society's mindset, eh ? ... take heart and be strong, for a society's attitudes do not change overnight, but it may just happen yet, eh ? ... a century ago, the UK was caught up in a paroxsym of victorian conservatism too, wasn't it ? ...
because it's the official policy ... there's "by right" and there's "by left" eh ? ...Originally posted by HENG@:thats funny, there are quite a lot of male homosexuals in the US army. how did u come up with that?
and official discrimination is not a reflection of wider society. its a reflection of the personal opinions of the people in power. In some places, the people in power are deluded as to what people want, or they are really just representing their own interests more than the people's
in sg society follows official policy, not the other way around. people there like sheep like thatOriginally posted by Fatum:because it's the official policy ... there's "by right" and there's "by left" eh ? ...
as for the second one, well, the lines are a bit blurred here perhaps ... being a politician in democracy is a always about trade offs and balances between listening to your constitutuents and listening to your "conscience" ... whatever that "conscience" may say, to paraphrase Edmund Burke, eh ? .... oh well, i still believe though, that the best way to change official policy, is to change the mindset, eh ? ...
