hi,
i'm a foreigner and planning to rent a car here for a few days and i've a question on turning at traffic lights:
1. if i'm at a cross junction and the light is green to go straight AND the right arrow is not lit, i can turn right when the opposite traffic is clear?
2. similar junction but right arrow is red, definitely cannot turn?
3. not sure if this exist: 2-way junction with normal traffic lights BUT without arrow lights but there's a road to my right, can i turn at such junction?
4. i've seen some traffic light junctions with the standby box jutting out, and some don't have it. does this mean i can only turn at a junction with the box?
5. i'm at a junction and i want to turn left, but the left lane is a bus lane, so can i stop at bus lane and wait for the lights to the green?
i'd appreciate more tips if you will!
Thanks in advance.
1. Yes, when traffic is clear, you can turn
2. Yes, definitely cannon turn
3. Yes, these are found at smaller roads in singapore with less traffic. You can turn, but with cautions of on coming traffic.
4. Sorry, I am not too sure about the 'standby' box that you're refering to. Is there anyway if you could show us a picture of it?
5. Depend on the type of bus lane. Full-day bus lane is strictly not allow for any other vehicle and is indicated with yellow + red line. Normal bus lane indicated yellow lines only means there's a timing to adheard to. Click bus lane info here.
For you:

and... it's illegal to use a cell phone while driving in singapore. Yes, you can use bluetooth or wired ear piece
Because you're new in singapore, I would say try to avoid getting close to any public/private transport buses. These drivers are very experience and have been driving for many years, they do not know you're new on the road, so they will not give way to you.
Junctions without a standby box: you can turn right at any junction with right-turn arrows in the lane. Where there isn't a standby box, you have to stay behind the line until you make the turn.
Bus lanes: if you're turning on to or off a road with a bus lane, you can only enter the bus lane where the line is broken - - - - -
U-turns are not allowed at junctions unless positively indicated with a "U-turn" sign. Penalties apply for U-turns at junctions without this sign, and are higher at junctions with a "no U-turn" sign.
And if you have held your licence for less than a year, you'll need to display a florescent triangle on front and rear wind screens.
Oh if you see this sign, you can turn left if traffic is clear.

It's at your own risk some driver can make good Uturn in just one go~ some need to reverse a bit~
Darkness_hacker99 but is it illegal to make U turn at traffic light junction if there is no U turn sign?
U-turn any where there are no U-turn sign is an offence. Even at breaks at curbs in the middle or the road.
The trouble with enforcing this rule is that the Traffic cops are not around all the time.
So carry on doing as you are doing. Its ok, except don't do it when the Traffic cops are around.
Are foreign driving licence recognised in Singapore?
Shouldn't they apply for conversion first?
mancha thanks for the enlightenment on U turn at traffic light junctions without U turn sign!
