A fictionalised chronicle of his own experiences during the making of a semi-autobiographical movie, Barfly, Bukowski traces the events of "Henry Chinaski" who is commissioned to write a screenplay for a movie.
The shenanigans and the insanity of Hollywood as seen by Chinaski as he drinks and writes his way through the making of a movie makes for an engrossing read. We know that Bukowski is essentially Chinaski in the book and there is great empathy for the man. His self-destructive almost desperate ways make us almost care for the man.
It is a book done in the way only Bukowski could have done. Not for your average reader.
I can't rate this book as it is quite an atypical novel.
