well, we remember things that stand out... things that are exceptional, right? so with nice people, you are nice and stuff... with jerks, they are horrid...
Good Guy
so the girl falls for this guy.. he turns out to be a very nice guy... he loves her, respects her and looks out for her... then he screws up (no one is perfect) and that one mistake stands out.. because she's desensitized to the good he's done.. that is the baseline.. so the mistake is what she remembers....
so after a while, she remembers that mistake only... and dwells on it.. and becomes bitter and throws him out....
Jerk
so the girl falls for this jerk.. he's terrible and mean to her.. but he does something really nice for her... once... and that's out of the ordinary.. she's desensitized to his general horrible nature... but remembers that one sweet thing he's done...
so she remembers this one good thing he's done for her... and goes "ahhh.. he's a good man after all!".. and sticks with him through all the abuse...
how's that for a theory.. not sure if it's true but sounds like it from what i see around.... -
I believe it is easier for guys to know whether another is a jerk or not. That is why I say the gals may not know it.

Correction, a guy will always make a biased assumption and label any other guy a jerk.
