  Hides its head in the ground when it sees a predator? If so, wouldn't it be dead meat whenever it sees a predator?
  
  Heard that it's only a myth/joke, but I'm not certain.

  No.....
  It delivers a (very very very) powerful kick at the enemy......
  
  OR, it can run away at over 60kph....
  
  Very few land animals can catch up to it at this speed.

  to hide, an ostrich lays flat on the ground...
  
  seems that the myth came about around 100 years ago when a cartoonist parodied the human tendency to hide from trouble by drawing the ostrich burying its head.. also because the ostrich tends to root around the soil looking for food..
