Well, after many flame wars, racial stereotypes, racist experiences here, some forumnites talked about positive experiences too with people from different races.
Will it be enough just to acknowledge the presence of a group or groups different from us? Does the present laws, environment and education system ensure Singapore do not collapse into another Yugoslavia or Indonesia if lets say PAP fall? Possible for us to mingle deeply with other people from different culture and race?
I don't know if we can ever develop a system of law or education that will ensure this. At the end of the day, it's a case of individuals dealing with individuals.
Every race had its fair share of jerks and really nice people. On account of this, it's simply not logical to say he's of this race, so he must be rude or arrogant. We need to take each person we come across as an individual.
A lot of what we're seeing is driven by jealousy and poor self-esteem. Personally, if I fail to get something that I'm after, the first thing I would be asking myself is, "How did I screw that up, and how do I get it right the next time?". To look for excuses and say that I didn't get it because of my race is a waste of time: that time is better spent fixing the problem, and if the problem is indeed race-based, then I'd be wasting my time going there again anyway.
The problem most people have is that thinking constructively takes too much energy for thier liking - they would rather have a blanket excuse for everything that they can apply without too much thought, and without too much self-examination. It doesn't matter even if it hovers at the edge of their consciousness that their excuse doesn't work - it's convenient and so they'll go with that.
