Bit of history, without Amway, MLM wont be legal in US. They fought against Federal Trade Commmission in the 70s. After the ruling went in their favour, they paved the way for MLM in US. You may ask me, if they pay the lowest commissions, how could they are still so successful ?
The answers:
Because their training and brain-washing is strong, so strong that people in Amway will not leave even if they don't make money; and they are good in looking for new bloods and young people who do not have much exposure to MLM.
In fact, I don't consider them as successful if you look at the range of products they have, meaning their sales volume per product is relatively small.
In Malaysia, Amway is so difficult to do that they are thought to switch to a "pyramid" method and will not reveal to a prospect that it is Amway.
In Singapore, people are more intelligent and many MLM Companies start together, so I think Amway will not be as successful here as compared to other countries which they started when there is less competitors.
My advice is don't join Amway unless you want to learn something from them and take it as a stepping stone, but beware, don't be brainwashed and start telling all your friends you will never leave Amway and that they are the best. This is how they teach you inside. I have seen many people said that and eventually find themselves very shameful to join other Companies and ruin their own future in MLM.
a) Whenever I mention MLM, what came to my father's mind and other people is Amway. Amway is used as a punchbag for many people in MLM or outside MLM. Like my father, and many other friends' fathers who used to joined it, they complained the low commission payout and many "rubbishy" products they sell. Amway is always used by many non MLMers as a "gauge of the industry" although this gauge is rather wrong.
For those inside MLM, especially Singapore companies, I seen many distributors "bashed" Amway as reasons why its better to join as "pioneers" in local start up. Their points are not wrong, but be cautious, whether its good to start local company or an international one, its best to consider all factors.
b) Experienced is true in the first two points. But as for the brainwashing part, so far I seen one person who worked in Amway for 11 years and only earning RM2000. He refused to quit, and many acquitted it to being brainwashed. I have no idea overall about this company training and marketing techniques.

No matter what company u r from, lets not backstab each other since it does no good to the industry.
Why this industry is getting worse is due to blacksheep among these companies. Jus take a look at the newspaper for the past one month, alot of articles is focusing on NETWORK MARKETING, and they also teaches us how to prevent from bad companies. if u wan to know, read the straits times forum on MLM and chinese lianhezhaobao on last sunday 18/01/04.
Most imptly, its not the money that counts. Some need money as their motivation, some need cars as their motivation, some need to sit down relax doing nothing to get money.. but there are some here to know more new friends, some here to learn the skills tat a real networker can attain eg public speaking and communication skills, and some here to gain general knowledge since it is an industry with people from all works of life.
