While its chief was assuring us that they will take care of my only son during the sending off ceremony, but on the contrary the trainees were asked not to report any abuse not even to parents! And it was the scar on my son's face that shocked us! His face was kicked by a Malay Sergeant during his jungle training. What if this kick landed on his eye and blinded for life? Who shall I bring this matter up or shall I write to the Minister of defence for redress?

You should call up the CO of BMTC to inform him about this. If you don't get a satisfactory answer, then complain to MINDEF.

i was a former instructor in tekong bmtc. i am very shocked by this and i must say i believe that your son was the victim of a rogue instructor. i am no longer serving my national service but i feel hurt that the bmtc instructor's image has been tarnished by such rogue instructors. i can tell you that having been an instructor there for a year, such cases are very rare and all instructors know and agree that such acts are wrong. i insist that that the instructor was only a black sheep. i think you should call the CO or commander BMTC.

I think this sort of mistreatment ought not to be tolerated. There's always a thin margin between tough training and abuse.
In context with your concern, I believe there's much cause of concern. Complaining to the CO or G1 would be approriate. If the matter blows up big enough, the DPM or PM might step in with their investigations -

tis is clearly a case of ill treatment
actually some of the type of punishments that the instructors in bmtc are "illegal"
but all tis are covered up

This msg may be abit late...by the time you read this..he may have already Pass out or that the issue has been redress..but then...just my 2 cents worth... :p ask your son about the actuak fact and what actually happened and how it happened..and once you have got your facts right then lodge a complain..inform his PC abt this issue(if the instructor is a sgt) or his OC abt this (following proper procedures..) and demand that they give appropriate expaination to this issue..then if everything cannot be done then you go up higher level..because if you shoot up straight up to the highest level..high chances are that they will bring up the matter to the lower level and wipe their hands off the issue...and your son may be subjected to more abuses in time to come..so the best bet is not to complain to the top authority immidiately...go thru the chain of command..as they always emphasize in the ARMY...Originally posted by Heartlander:It was a "shock" for parent like us to send our children to NS! To the concerned parent of victimised child:
Your child's enlishment in BMT (basic military training) is just the first step into Army.
It's just the Orientation camp and he is getting such treatment.....I think he will have more to come if he gets into a active unit where disciplines are enforced in some but not so in some.
I was in the a very active combat unit before. trust me, i know how life is like in that camp but there is no kicking or whatsoever, only some physical punishment like run to the farthest lamp-post, touch it and come back!
My recruits complained to me in the past that the PC (Platoon Commander) used to punish them to carry "Ali-Ba-Ba" bag and crawl along the corridor when they did not do something right.
But I think one of the recruits endured throughout th 3 months Unit Course and pass out the course. He later went through some channel and complained the PC's actions to some chiefs who finally was punished in Detention Barracks.
When I was posted to an admin unit (Formation HQ), a parent cried all her way to the chief's desk and tell her how her son was "suffering" in the unit....
I think the chief had a meeting with the Unit CO and trashed it out in front of him.
Outcome: better than no reporting.
So, I suggest the parent bring this matter up to the OC first before bringing it up to the Commanding Officer, then to the Chief, finally to the Ministry of defence.
Normally, it should be resolved at the early stage, shouldn't be any problems.

I believe so. Anyway, such treatment can't be tolerated either. That's why I say the sergent probably had a fierce temper. Or was it just tale-spinning from your son? Nothing wrong in pursuing for the truth. Only benefits for all.

Can't believe this is till happening in SAF. Can you please clarify that with your son? Or you are trying the make up facts about the 'kicking' part of the story? It's a very serious offence about physical ill-treatment of recruits in BMT, as they have just enlisted and are considered especially 'fragile'.

Maybe you cannot totally blame the sergent for kicking your son. I'm not sayin that your son deserve it.
But i've done my duty and i know that such things are quite common. Have you heard about the hokkien peng? those in mono intakes? They are treated harsher than those in BMTC schools. So be glad your son is in a BMTC not MONO intake.
What can your complain do?
Ask your son, have he done anything wrong?.Being Chao Gen or Sabo king? The sergent is also human, he is prone to his own temprement, maybe it's at the spur of the moment.I am not saying he's right in kickin your son. And i surpport that he seek redress.
But, How is he going to stand up for himself when his mama steps in?. What will his plattoon mates think of him. Will you be with him every min in camp?. There's many many ways to play/disturb a person in camp if you are still a recruit or "green
bird" or worst a "Marksman".
Do you know blanket parties still exist?, do you know you can get charge easily if you make a small mistake and everything has to go by the book? But chances of this slowly diminish when your experience increases.
I had friends who went in DB just because of certain minor things ,and just because someone wans you to. But that's the extreme case.
Minor Cases will be Confiment, or loads of extra duties.

But anyway im in Commandos Unit .
Training very tough there .
But i endured the BMT training .
Have to do a road march of 72KM .
But up to now , Im a proud NS Soldier .
