The victim said she was on a bus when she felt someone touch her. When she asked passengers for a phone to call the police, the accused offered his.
A FATHER of two who was accused by a woman of molesting her on a bus lent her his mobile phone so that she could report him to the police.
The 20-year-old woman told the court that she was on the vehicle's upper deck and felt someone touch her.
She turned around and saw Kwan Peng Hong, who was sitting behind her, withdrawing his hand.
"I stood up and asked him what he was trying to do. He said: 'I just got excited'," she said.
She warned him not to touch her again.
Later, she alerted the bus driver and asked to be taken to the nearest police station.
When she asked fellow passengers for a phone to call the police, Kwan gave her his cellular phone.
The incident happened along Tanglin Road on Nov 3, 1998.
In his defence, Kwan, a former treasury analyst, denied saying he had become excited. He said he was monitoring the exchange rates on his pager at the time.
But District Judge Audrey Lim said the woman was a reliable witness who had no reason to lie.
Kwan's lawyer, Mr Edmond Pereira, said in mitigation that because of the investigations, his client had left his job.
He urged the court to impose a fine only as Kwan, a first offender, had not run away after the incident.
Also, there was no injury to the victim, he said.
The judge sentenced Kwan to 10 weeks' jail on Friday. He could have been jailed for up to two years and fined or caned.
He is out on $10,000 bail pending his appeal against the conviction and sentence.

Why on earth would the molester lend her his phone to call the police?
Another thing that struck me when I read the article was that in essence, this man had to leave his job, and got sentenced to 10 weeks in jail... WHY? Because "District Judge Audrey Lim said the woman was a reliable witness who had no reason to lie."
WHAT?!?!?!?!?!?
Were there ANY other witnesses besides the victim? none mentioned in the article...
Was there ANY incriminatin evidence to support the victim's claim? nope... only her word.
Do courts in Singapore convict men of molest based on the "victim's" word?
Who knows... maybe next time us guys might get approached on the bus by pretty girls who whisper sweetly into our ears, 'hand over the wallet and handphone or I'd scream molest...'
Maybe you should go attend the court, you'll understand better.
wow....damn expensive to molest people in singapore...come down to lovely malaysia
: )
seriously, I think that man should have been let of, poor guy only wanted a bit of fun and the women denied him that. And he was kind enough to lend her his phone...so innocently...
he only touched her once! and the article does not even specify WHERE he touched her...if it was her shoulder or even her back...I don't think the sentence is justified or even necessary.
this is like the exact opposite of some Islamic countries...if you were raped, they would require you to have witnesses if you want to press charges. who gets raped in front of many people?!?!?!?
but this is ridiculous...
This is a major area of concern in the local judiciary system. The words of an alleged female victim can destroy a man. Look at the recent reports of false rape and molest. The papers are quick to defend the women and demonize the men, even in the absence of evidence beyond the victim's statements...
*sign*, in today's world, men are as likely to be victimized by women... Maybe it's time to afford men some protection.
Yeah. We should do something to protect ourselves from such women. But what?
we will be protected when the day male is stripped off the urge for sex.
Haa~
